¿Eres un católico alegre?
Una de las tentaciones más serias que ahogan el fervor y la audacia es la conciencia de derrota que nos convierte en pesimistas quejosos y desencantados con cara de vinagre. (EG. 85)
Hay demasiada negatividad a nuestro alrededor. ¿Cuál es el derrotismo que identifica el Papa Francisco? No son las grandes pruebas las que sofocan nuestra audacia. La respuesta de Kansas City al trágico tiroteo que tuvo lugar durante la celebración de la victoria de los Chiefs en el Super Bowl fue la resiliencia de una comunidad que se unió para apoyarse unos a otros en un momento de tragedia. La gente se reunió para el velorio y la Misa de la Resurrección para hablar con valentía sobre la fe y el cuidado mutuo.
El derrotismo es cuando nos rendimos, cuando dejamos de tener esperanzas y no nos apoyamos unos a otros. Hay alegría en nuestro testimonio de fe. No tenemos la oportunidad de que varios miles de personas den un paso al frente como testigos de la esperanza. Cuando esto sucede, la gente debe tomar nota. No todo el mundo reconoce lo bueno que le rodea. Necesitamos hablar por la bondad de nuestra familia, iglesia y comunidad.
El domingo hablé en las Misas que ofrecí sobre la experiencia del velorio y Misa por la víctima del tiroteo en la celebración del Super Bowl. Varias personas en la puerta de la Iglesia, simplemente dijeron: “Gracias por llamar la atención sobre el bien de nuestra comunidad”. No hay necesidad de derrotismo. Seamos agradecidos por el bien que vemos en nuestras vidas.

One of the more serious temptations which stifles boldness and zeal is a defeatism which turns us into querulous and disillusioned pessimists, “sourpusses”. (EG. 84)
There is too much negativity around us. What is the defeatism that Pope Francis identifies? It is not the great trials that stifle our boldness. The response of Kansas City to the tragic shooting that took place at a celebration of the Chiefs winning the Super Bowl was the resilience of a community rallying to support one another at a time of tragedy. People gathered for the wake and Mass of the Resurrection to boldly speak of faith and care for one another.
Defeatism is when we give up, when we fail to hope and fail to support one another. There is joy in our witness to faith. We do not have the opportunity for several thousand people to step forward as witnesses to hope. When it does happen, people need to take note. Not everyone recognizes the good around them. We need to speak out for the goodness of our family, church and community.
On Sunday, I spoke at the Masses that I offered about the experience of the wake and Mass for the victim of the shooting at the Super Bowl rally. Several people at the door of the Church, simply said, “Thank you for calling attention to the good in our community.” There is no need for defeatism. Let us be grateful for the good that we see in our lives.

Oh Jesús, tú nos llamas: “Síganme”. Bendice, Señor, a todos los que acogen tu llamado. Puede que el camino no sea fácil, pero tenemos la confianza de que todo es posible si caminamos contigo. Que este viaje nos abra los ojos a las maravillas de tu amor por nosotros. Oramos por toda tu gente, por todos los creyentes e incrédulos, por los líderes y seguidores. Oramos por la sanación, el perdón, la compasión, la justicia y la paz. Oramos para que, al seguirte, nosotros también podamos ser pescadores de hombres. Bendícenos en nuestro viaje.
O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
