What gives you hope? / ¿Qué le da esperanza?

What gives you hope?

What gives you hope?

This question usually comes up in difficult times. A sad event is taking place in Kansas City today. The funeral of Lisa López-Galván, victim of the shooting at the Kansas City Chiefs’ Super Bowl celebration parade, will be held in our church. Her death has been a shocking moment not only for her family and her loved ones, but for the entire city. There is so much pain in a tragic event.

What gives life to ministry? It is the people. Not the ones who cause harm, but those who come together to support each other in the most difficult times. As much as there is grief in Kansas City over what happened, we are blessed with the humanity of a community walking together to remember her life. Last week, people came to celebrate a victory, but today we celebrate a life.

When I walked into the Church last night, I saw more than a community grieving. It was a community wanting to be better. Last summer, I asked people in Goodland, Kansas to tell me what was good about Goodland. The common response was “it’s the people.” Well, what is good about Kansas City. “It’s the people.” Today, it is a day to honor Lisa, and pray for all our brothers and sisters in Kansas City.

O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
