El trabajador rural inmigrante
Mientras me preparo para trabajar con la Red Católica del Campesino Migrante, invito a los lectores a comprender la naturaleza cambiante y desafiante de brindar atención pastoral a la comunidad de inmigrantes rurales. La imagen inmediata del trabajador inmigrante rural recuerda al trabajador campesino migrante que vemos trabajando en los campos de los Estados Unidos. La agricultura es el mayor empleador del trabajador rural inmigrante, pero solo a un nivel del 29,5% de los trabajadores inmigrantes rurales según una encuesta nacional de CMFN en 2004 – 2006.

“Como subraya la tabla de arriba, la composición ocupacional de los inmigrantes rurales ha cambiado dramáticamente. Ya pasaron los días en que los inmigrantes rurales eran sinónimo de trabajadores campesinos. Ahora la variedad de ocupaciones de los nuevos inmigrantes se expande, así como los ranchos propiedad de familias van decreciendo y los centros urbanos se van incrementando.”
La Red Católica de Trabajadores Agrícolas Migrantes atiende a los trabajadores agrícolas y trabajadores rurales inmigrantes en las áreas de justicia social, servicios comunitarios y cuidado pastoral. A menudo, en las áreas de justicia social y servicios especiales, quienes participan en el ministerio migrante se asocian con el apoyo diocesano de las organizaciones benéficas católicas y los servicios sociales. El cuidado pastoral a veces se retrasa, ya que se supone que los programas parroquiales ordinarios de educación religiosa y preparación sacramental responden suficientemente a las necesidades especiales del trabajador inmigrante rural y sus familias.
Necesitamos tomarnos en serio la reflexión del Papa Francisco sobre la falta de atención espiritual, especialmente en el ámbito de la celebración de los sacramentos para el trabajador rural inmigrante.
“Quiero expresar con dolor que la peor discriminación que sufren los pobres es la falta de atención espiritual. La inmensa mayoría de los pobres tiene una especial apertura a la fe; necesitan a Dios y no podemos dejar de ofrecerles su amistad, su bendición, su Palabra, la celebración de los Sacramentos y la propuesta de un camino de crecimiento y de maduración en la fe. La opción preferencial por los pobres debe traducirse principalmente en una atención religiosa privilegiada y prioritaria”. (EG. 200)
Estoy encantado con la oportunidad de trabajar a nivel nacional en defensa del cuidado espiritual de los migrantes, refugiados e inmigrantes rurales. Que los sacerdotes, los trabajadores religiosos y los catequistas renueven la vida sacramental del inmigrante rural. Los desafíos son grandes, pero las personas de fe necesitan nuestro apoyo y cuidado.

The Rural Immigrant Worker
As I prepare to work with the Catholic Migrant Farmworker Network, I invite readers to understand the changing and challenging nature of providing pastoral care for the rural immigrant community. The immediate image of the rural immigrant worker calls to mind the migrant farmworker that we see working in fields across the United States. Agriculture is the largest employer of the immigrant rural worker, but only at a level of 29.5% of the rural immigrant workers according to a CMFN national survey in 2004 – 2006.

“As highlighted by the above table, the occupational composition of rural immigrants is changing dramatically. Gone are the days when rural immigrants were synonymous with farmworkers. Now the varied occupations of the new immigrants are expanding along with the dying family farm and urban sprawl.”
The Catholic Migrant Farmworker Network ministers to the farmworker and immigrant rural workers in the areas of social justice, community services and pastoral care. Often in the areas of social justice and special services those engaged in migrant ministry partner with diocesan support from Catholic charities and social services. The pastoral care lags at times, as ordinary parish programs of religious education and sacramental preparation are presumed sufficiently responsive to the special needs of the rural immigrant worker and their families.
We need to take seriously the reflection of Pope Francis on the lack of spiritual attention, especially in the area of celebration of the sacraments for the rural immigrant worker.
“I want to say, with regret, that the worst discrimination which the poor suffer is the lack of spiritual care. The great majority of the poor have a special openness to the faith; they need God, and we must not fail to offer them his friendship, his blessing, his word, the celebration of the sacraments and a journey of growth and maturity in the faith. Our preferential option for the poor must mainly translate into a privileged and preferential religious care.” (EG. 200)
I am thrilled with the opportunity to work on a national level in advocacy for the spiritual care of migrants, refugees, and rural immigrants. May priests, religious workers and catechists renew the sacramental life of the rural immigrant. The challenges are great, but the people of faith need our support and care.
