La primacía del amor
Cuando Jesús supo que había llegado su hora de pasar de esta vida al Padre, reunidos con sus apóstoles, dijo: «Ámense los unos a los otros como yo los he amado.» (Jn 13, 34). La forma más elevada de vivir la fe católica es amarse los unos a los otros. Aprender a amar como Cristo ama no se basa en la educación, el estatus social, la herencia o el poder. Es generosidad, respeto, cuidado, perdón y compromiso con el otro. El Papa Juan Pablo II dijo: «La Iglesia no debe dejar de hacer oír la voz de la fraternidad, acompañándola con gestos que testimonien el primado de la caridad». Lo dijo como parte de su Mensaje para la Jornada Mundial del Migrante y del Refugiado de 1996. A pesar de todo lo que pueda dividir a las personas, el amor mutuo es el fundamento de nuestra fe. No es una virtud extraordinaria amar a quienes nos aman, pero Jesús nos llama a «amen a sus enemigos y rueguen por sus perseguidores». (Mt. 5: 44)
Es fácil desanimarse por las noticias del mundo que nos rodea. Recibimos malas noticias sobre cosas grandes y pequeñas. La división puede darse dentro de las familias y cerca del hogar, o de personas y lugares fuera de nuestro control. Necesitamos escuchar a quienes dicen: “No se preocupen por las victorias o las derrotas, simplemente ayúdense unos a otros a ser la mejor versión de sí mismos donde sea que estén”. Decidamos amar.
Hace tres años, mientras estaba sirviendo en Oklahoma, aprendí del Beato Stanley Rother. Me dijeron que era un niño ordinario que creció en una granja ordinaria. Hubo un estudiante ordinario, un seminarista ordinario, un sacerdote ordinario y misionero ordinario. Como misionero en Guatemala, recibió amenazas de muerte y regresó a los Estados Unidos en busca de seguridad en 1980, pero después de unos meses regresó a Guatemala diciendo: “El pastor no abandona a su rebaño”. Poco después de regresar a Guatemala, se convirtió en un “mártir ordinario”. En Oklahoma, alguien puede ser ordinario y ser un santo. Nuestro objetivo en la vida no es la perfección, es amar. Conocemos nuestros límites y conocemos los límites de los demás, pero no hay límite para las posibilidades de quienes aman lo suficiente como para sacrificarse por los demás.
No todos los discípulos están llamados a ser mártires, pero todos estamos llamados a amar. Esforcémonos por amar como Jesús ama. San Pablo escribe hermosamente sobre cómo debemos amar: “La caridad es paciente, es servicial; la caridad no es envidiosa, no es jactanciosa, no se engríe; es decorosa; no busca su interés; no se irrita; no toma en cuenta el mal; no se alegra de la injusticia; se alegra con la verdad. Todo lo excusa. Todo lo cree. Todo lo espera. Todo lo soporta. La caridad no acaba nunca.” (1 Cor. 13: 4-8).

The primacy of love
When Jesus knew that his hour had come to pass from this life to his Father, with his Apostles gathered, he said: “Love one another as I have loved you.” (Jn 13: 34) The highest form of living the Catholic faith is loving one another. Learning how to love as Christ loves is not based on education, social status, heritage, or power. It is generosity, respect, care, forgiveness and commitment to the other. Pope John Paul II said, “the Church must not fail to speak up for brotherhood and to accompany it with acts testifying to the primacy of charity.” He said this as part of his Message for World Day of Migrants and Refugees in 1996. Despite anything and everything that may divide people, love for one another is the foundation of our faith. It is not extraordinary virtue to love those who love us, but Jesus tells us to “love your enemies, and pray for those who persecute you.” (Mt. 5: 44)
It is easy to become discouraged by news of the world around us. We receive bad news about things great and small. Division may be within families and close to home, or from people and places outside of one’s control. We need to listen to those who say, “Don’t worry about wins or losses, just help each other to be the best version of themselves wherever they are.” Let us decide to love.
Three years ago, while serving in Oklahoma, I learned about Blessed Stanley Rother. They say that he was an ordinary child growing up on an ordinary farm. He was an ordinary student, an ordinary seminarian, an ordinary priest, and an ordinary missionary. As a missionary in Guatemala, he received death threats and went back to the United States for safety in 1980, but after a few months he returned to Guatemala saying, “The shepherd does not leave his flock.” Soon after returning to Guatemala, he became an “ordinary martyr.” In Oklahoma, one can be “ordinary” and be a saint. Our goal in life is not perfection, it is to love. We know our limits and we know the limits of others, but there is no limit to the possibilities for those who love enough to sacrifice themselves for others.
Not all disciples are called to be martyrs, but we are all called to love. Let us strive to love as Jesus loves. St. Paul writes beautifully about how we are to love, “Love is patient, love is kind. It is not jealous, [love] is not pompous, it is not inflated, it is not rude, it does not seek its own interests, it is not quick-tempered, it does not brood over injury, it does not rejoice over wrongdoing but rejoices with the truth. It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never fails.” (1 Cor. 13: 4-8)

O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
