La oveja perdida
En el Evangelio de Lucas, 15:1-7
Soy miembro de la Congregación del Santísimo Redentor, los Redentoristas. Identificarnos con el pastor en busca de la “oveja perdida” es parte de nuestro carisma redentorista. Si bien estamos llamados a servir a “los más abandonados”, primero debemos reconocer a la “oveja perdida”. Reconocer a la “oveja perdida” como un pecador que necesita redención refleja el evangelio de Lucas. En el evangelio de Lucas, los fariseos acusaron a Jesús de comer con los pecadores y darles la bienvenida. Los artistas pintan a la oveja perdida atrapada en medio de una zarza de espinas. Necesita ser liberada de las dolorosas espinas, y el pastor sana al cordero, lo coloca sobre sus hombros y lo lleva de regreso al rebaño. Esto encaja con la imagen de la redención del cordero perdido atrapado en las espinas del pecado. Tal imagen exige conversión, cambio y redención.
En la parábola, el pastor se regocija al encontrar el cordero, lo coloca sobre sus hombros y llama a sus amigos y vecinos diciendo: “Alégrense conmigo…”. Debemos prestar atención a la respuesta de Jesús al pecador. No hay juicio, ni castigo del cordero.
Algunas personas consideren la Iglesia como dura, juzgadora y sin misericordia. Ciertamente, ha habido predicadores del “infierno y la condenación” en nuestra historia, pero la imagen del pastor que cuida a la “oveja perdida” nos llama a tener lugar para el pecador en nuestra comunidad. El trato duro del pecador en las Escrituras lo dan los fariseos, o como Jesús los llama, los hipócritas. Seguimos a Cristo, el que “acogió y comió” con los pecadores.

The Lost Sheep
In the Gospel of Luke, 15:1-7
I am a member of the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer, the Redemptorists. Identifying with the shepherd in search of the “lost sheep” is part of our Redemptorist charism. While we are called to serve “the most abandoned”, we need to first recognize the “lost sheep”. Recognizing the “lost sheep” as a sinner in need of redemption reflects the gospel of Luke. In the gospel of Luke, the Pharisees accused Jesus of eating with and welcoming sinners. Artists paint the lost sheep as caught in the midst of a bramble of thorns. It needs to be released from the painful thorns, and the shepherd heals the lamb and places the lamb on his shoulders and takes the lamb back to the flock. This fits the image of redemption of the lost lamb caught in the thorns of sin. Such an image calls for conversion, change, and redemption.
In the parable, the shepherd rejoices at finding the lamb, places it on his shoulders and calls out his friends and neighbors saying “Rejoice with me…” We should pay attention to Jesus’ response to the sinner. There is no judgment or punishment of the lamb.
Some people speak of the Church as hard, judging and merciless. Certainly, there have been the “Hell and damnation” preachers in our history, but the image of the shepherd tending the “lost sheep” calls us to make space for the sinner in our community. The harsh treatment of the sinner in scripture is done by the Pharisee, or as Jesus calls them the hypocrites. We follow Christ, the one who “welcomed and ate with sinners.”
