Hoy me pregunto, “¿Somos compasivos y misericordiosos?”

The Lord is kind and merciful

This Sunday, our responsorial psalm refrain is, “The Lord is kind and merciful.” Today I wonder, “Are we kind and merciful?” Genesis says that God created humanity in his image and likeness. He looked at his creation and said it is good. “Are we good?” I believe that “the Lord is kind and merciful,” but it is difficult to see kindness and mercy in people today, even in the Church.

This week, I was asked what I thought about the bru-ha-ha in the Church about the words of Baptism. I had no idea what my friend was talking about. When I read about concern of the validity of Baptism, based on whether the presider of the baptism said “I” or “we” shocked me. All I could think about the story was “how trivial”.

We profess that God is all powerful, all knowing, all loving. God forgives generously. He sent his Son “not to condemn the world, but that the world would be saved.” (Jn. 3:17) God is not confined by the words of the creatures that he created. Jesus came as a witness to God’s love for us. He touched the leper, the paralytic, the blind. He made disciples of ordinary people, even tax collectors. He ate and drank with sinners. He gave us the parable of judgment, telling us that judgement would not be based on our faith and words, but on recognizing him in the hungry, the thirsty, the stranger, the prisoner, the untouchables of the world.

As we respond to the psalm, “the Lord is kind and merciful,” may we imitate the Lord. May people say of us, “See how they love one another.”

O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
