El Señor escucha la oración de los pobres
“El Señor es un juez que no se deja impresionar por apariencias. No menosprecia a nadie por ser pobre y escucha las súplicas del oprimido.“ (Sir. 35:12)
Sirácides casi se disculpa por el cuidado de Dios por los pobres, diciendo que “El Señor no se deja impresionar por apariencias” a los pobres. Jesús dice más en favor de los pobres llamando la atención sobre el recaudador de impuestos siendo “justificado” y el fariseo siendo “humillado”.
Los documentos de la Iglesia desde el Concilio Vaticano II y las declaraciones de todos los Papas desde el Concilio llaman a la Iglesia a tener una “opción preferencial por los pobres”. Me sentí privilegiado al escuchar al obispo John Steinbock llamar a sus sacerdotes a poner atención a los amados por Jesús. Este fue su última conferencia a sus sacerdotes en 2010. Poco después de su charla, nos informó que se estaba muriendo. Como último deseo para su clero, el mensaje tenía un gran significado para todos los presentes.
Proclamando el Reino de Dios
Jesús se encontraba principalmente entre los pobres, los enfermos, los cojos, los afligidos, los oprimidos, los marginados, los leprosos, los cobradores de impuestos y los despreciados por la alta sociedad. A ellos especialmente Jesús les proclamaba el Reino y el amor de Dios. ¿Quiénes son estas personas en nuestra sociedad y en nuestras parroquias? Son los pobres, las familias desamparadas, los trabajadores agrícolas y sus familias, los migrantes, los indocumentados, los enfermos, los prisioneros. La gran mayoría de estas personas solo asisten a misa de vez en cuando.
Estas reflexiones hablan de los que viven en el margen de la Iglesia, en carros, en campos de trabajo, en grupos aislados de casas, y en granjas y lecherías a través de la diócesis sin el lujo del transporte y sin estabilidad en sus vidas. Debemos ayudar pastoralmente, especialmente a aquellos que Nuestro Señor ama de una manera especial. Para ellos es el Reino de Dios.

“Though not unduly partial toward the weak, the Lord hears the cry of the oppressed.” (Sir. 35:12)
Sirach finds it difficult to call the afflicted, “blessed”. He almost apologizes for God’s care for the poor, saying that the Lord is “not unduly partial toward the weak.” Jesus goes much further than Sirach, elevating the faith of the poor by calling attention to the tax collector being “justified” and the Pharisee being “humbled”.
Church documents since the Second Vatican Council and statements from all the Popes since the Council call of the Church to have a “preferential option for the poor.” I felt privileged in hearing Bishop John Steinbock calling on his priests to be aware of those loved by Jesus. His message was his last conference to his priests in 2010. Shortly after his talk, he informed us that he was dying. As his last wish for his clergy, the message held great meaning for all of us present.
To whom did Jesus proclaim the Kingdom of God?
“Jesus was found mostly amongst the poor, the sick, the lame, the suffering, the oppressed, the marginalized, the leper, tax collectors, those looked down upon and despised by the upper class. It was to these especially that He proclaimed the Kingdom of God, and manifested God’s love. Who are these people in our present society, and those within our parishes? They are the poor, the homeless families, the farm workers and their families, the migrant, the undocumented, the sick, the imprisoned. The vast majority of these people rarely come to Mass.”
“These reflections are speaking of those that live on the margin of the Church, living in cars, in labor camps, in isolated clusters of homes, and those that work on the farms and dairies found throughout our diocese, so often without the luxury of transportation and of living a normal scheduled life. We should be pastoral, especially to those that our Lord loves in a special way. It is just such as these that the Kingdom of God is comprised.”

O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
