Lecciones del Ministerio Migrante para los desafíos de hoy
Durante los últimos días, el Padre Migrante reflexionó sobre una experiencia del Ministerio Migrante de 2010 a 2013 en Allensworth, California. En ese momento, presento el programa de verano de la Primera Comunión de dos semanas como un ejemplo de los “nuevos métodos” de evangelización promovidos por el Papa Juan Pablo II. El programa reconoció las circunstancias de las personas a las que queríamos servir. Ofrecer clases en una tribuna de rodeo calurosa y polvorienta ciertamente no era lo ideal. Todos los días las temperaturas eran de casi 100º o más.
Nuestro equipo de misión se quedó en Bakersfield y todas las noches íbamos en coche a Allensworth para comer en las casas de familias con niños en el programa. Como íbamos a entrar al pueblo una hora antes de las clases, vimos a niños de hasta dos millas de distancia caminando hacia las clases. Durante las dos semanas de clases, tuvimos una asistencia casi perfecta de todos los estudiantes. Apreciamos la dificultad por los jóvenes y sus padres en asistir cada día.
No teníamos el lujo de salas de clase y el aire acondicionado. Debido a la pobreza y las distancias de las parroquias locales, los niños no podían asistir regularmente a las misas dominicales en las ciudades que estaban a quince o veinte millas de distancia. Como descubrieron los seminaristas, los niños respondieron con alegría y fe.
A medida que avanzamos hacia una participación más regular en las comunidades de nuestra iglesia, todo el ministerio de la iglesia debe ser creativo para dar la bienvenida a las personas a la iglesia. El Papa Francisco reconoció que los pobres sufren una “falta de atención espiritual”. Hoy, todos hemos experimentado una “falta de atención espiritual”. En el ministerio con migrantes, he aprendido que las nuevas formas creativas no son perfectas. Cada año de nuestros programas de verano para trabajadores campesinos en The Dalles, Oregon, hicimos ajustes. Nuestros programas mejoraron técnicamente, pero cada año los niños y sus familias experimentaron el amor de Dios. Creemos que, a pesar de nuestras desventuras, Dios provee para el Pueblo de Dios.

The following year in Allensworth
In the months after the celebration of First Communions on a ranch in Allensworth, CA, I continued celebrating Mass once a month in the town. On December 12, we celebrated Mass for Our Lady of Guadalupe at the community center. It was a grand celebration, with Mariachi playing for the Mass. One of the Mariachi commented after the Mass, “Padre, I have been singing for Masses for twenty-five years, and I have never seen children so reverent in receiving communion as here.” Yesterday, the story of the First Communion for those children was told by seminarians who prepared the children in unusual conditions.
The seminarians indicated that there was an annual turnover of 60% of the community. At first, I did not expect that we would need to have a summer First Eucharist program as we had in 2011. By the Spring of 2012, it was obvious that many of those who received the year before no longer lived in the town, but there were many new children in the town. The second summer, there were 53 children seeking First Eucharist.
In that summer, a new team of seminarians helped with our program. They adopted a similar program, but added some new ideas for the children. A religious sister joined the team and along with the program for the children, each evening we presented a class for the parents. We asked all parents to attend a class the first evening that the children had their class. Almost every parent attended the class. We told the parents that we would offer an adult class each evening. We assured them that if they chose not to attend, their children still would receive their First Communion. About 90% of the parents came all ten evenings.
One man informed me on the first evening that his wife would come to the classes, but he preferred to watch soccer games on TV. He did not miss a single evening of the adult classes. Four of the couples registered to have their marriages blessed in the Church, and within six months all of them received the sacrament of Marriage.
I spent three and a half years attending to the needs of the isolated community of Allensworth while I was the Director for Campesino Ministry in Fresno. I loved all the communities that I served in those years in Fresno, but Allensworth was special. The seminarians described Allensworth as a “small, dusty town”. It was on the fringes of society and the Church, but it holds a very special place in my heart. It is a model of the Church responding to the special circumstances that Pope Francis and Pope John Paul II call to our attention.
