The call to "go forth" / El llamado a "salir"

The call to “go forth” / El llamado a “salir”

padremigrante September 15, 2023 CMFN

The call to “go forth”

“All of us are asked to obey his (Jesus’) call to go forth from our own comfort zone in order to reach all the “peripheries” in need of the light of the Gospel.” (EG. 20)

Pope Francis says that the call to reach out to the periphery is for all followers of Christ. This call to mission always brings the light of the Gospel, not only to those on the periphery, but also enlightens those who called to go forth. Last week during my homily I said, “I don’t care if the poor love the Church, but I care that the Church love the poor.” I was uncertain about how people would react to the statement.

Several people said that they needed to reconsider their own motivations for helping the poor, the hungry, the ill, the stranger, the homeless and all people on the fringes of the Church. Pope Francis warns us that we need to leave our “comfort zone”. It is precisely in leaving our comfort zone that we bring the light of the Gospel to others. Our love for the poor does not depend on their response, but on our witness to the life of the Gospel in us.

O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
