Sufrimiento y dignidad
Es una lección de humildad leer las observaciones del Papa Francisco sobre el malestar de las personas al ver a los que sufren. Conocemos la tentación de apartar la mirada del sufrimiento de los demás. Reconocemos que vivimos en una sociedad malsana, pero no queremos ser responsables del sufrimiento humano. Reconocer la dignidad de los pobres es obviamente una virtud, pero no fácil de mantener. Considere estas observaciones en Fratelli Tutti.
FT. 64: Nos acostumbramos a mirar para el costado, a pasar de lado, a ignorar las situaciones hasta que estas nos golpean directamente.
FT. 65: Como todos estamos muy concentrados en nuestras propias necesidades, ver a alguien sufriendo nos molesta, nos perturba, porque no queremos perder nuestro tiempo por culpa de los problemas ajenos. Estos son síntomas de una sociedad enferma, porque busca construirse de espaldas al dolor.
FT. 66: Miremos el modelo del buen samaritano. Es un texto que nos invita a que resurja nuestra vocación de ciudadanos del propio país y del mundo entero, constructores de un nuevo vínculo social.
FT. 68: No es una opción posible vivir indiferentes ante el dolor, no podemos dejar que nadie quede “a un costado de la vida”. Esto nos debe indignar, hasta hacernos bajar de nuestra serenidad para alterarnos por el sufrimiento humano. Eso es dignidad.

Suffering and dignity
It is humbling reading Pope Francis’ observations about the uneasiness of people when seeing people who are suffering. We all know the temptation to look away from the suffering of others. We recognize that we live in an unhealthy society, but we do not want to be responsible for human suffering. Recognizing the dignity of the poor is obviously a virtue, but not easily maintained. Consider these observations in Fratelli Tutti.
FT. 64: We have become accustomed to looking the other way, passing by, ignoring situations until they affect us directly.
FT. 65: Caught up as we are with our own needs, the sight of a person who is suffering disturbs us. It makes us uneasy, since we have no time to waste on other people’s problems. These are symptoms of an unhealthy society. A society that seeks prosperity but turns its back on suffering.
FT. 66: Let us look to the example of the Good Samaritan. Jesus’ parable summons us to rediscover our vocation as citizens of our respective nations and of the entire world, builders of a new social bond.
FT. 68: We cannot be indifferent to suffering; we cannot allow anyone to go through life as an outcast. Instead, we should feel indignant, challenged to emerge from our comfortable isolation and to be changed by our contact with human suffering. That is the meaning of dignity.
