(Lo que sigue es un blog durante la Semana Santa, el año pasado: consideré las confesiones de la Semana Santa.)
Las confesiones durante la Semana Santa en los ranchos de México son memorables. Cada vez que celebraba la Semana Santa en México, iba con un equipo de misioneros laicos y religiosas. Celebramos los Ejercicios Cuaresmales. El papel del sacerdote era oír confesiones y celebrar las liturgias de la Semana Santa. Una vez que comenzaron las confesiones, la gente vino hasta que llegó la hora de la misa o cuando las hermanas vinieron y dijeron: “Padre, almorzaremos”. Como muy pocos trabajaban en esos días, las confesiones eran a menudo sesiones de mini consejería. No hubo prisa para la gente, pero para el sacerdote, no hay paradas.
Un momento memorable llegó cuando una mujer entró con su nieta. La niña dijo: “Mi abuela quiere que traduzca su confesión porque no habla español”. No quería que la niña escuchara la confesión de su abuela, así que le dije: “Diga a su abuela que el padre entiende el mixteco. Simplemente no lo habla”. La abuela sonrió y la niña salió del confesionario. Pensé: “Señor, tú la entiendes y estoy seguro de que ya la has perdonado”. Por la penitencia, le dije que rezara tres Avemarías por su nieta.
Mi primera Semana Santa en México fue una semana antes de comenzar a estudiar español en México. Tenía una base en español, pero ciertamente no hablaba con fluidez. Un hombre bromeó con otro miembro del equipo misionero que confesaría en otomí para que el Padre no lo entendiera. Le dije que no se preocupara, probablemente tampoco entendería su rápido español.
Los días de misión son agotadores, pero para mí, la Semana Santa en México fue sobrecogedora. La devoción, el ayuno, la abstinencia y la alegría de las celebraciones de la Semana Santa no se pueden duplicar aquí. Creo que mis tres experiencias de Semana Santa en México me dieron una base en la fe de los migrantes que tan bien sirve para trabajar con todos los migrantes en los Estados Unidos. Cuando uno experimenta las tradiciones de fe en otra nación, sabe la importancia de llevar esas tradiciones aquí. Incluso si la gente viene de otro continente, aprecian los esfuerzos por celebrar las tradiciones culturales de fe.

Holy Week Confessions

Confessions during Holy Week are memorable in the ranchos of Mexico. Each time that I celebrated Holy Week in Mexico, I went with a team of lay missionaries and religious sisters. Our events were called, Ejercicios Cuaresmales (Lenten Exercises). The role of the priest was to hear confessions and to celebrate the liturgies of Holy Week. Once confessions began, people came until it was time for Mass or when the sisters came and said, “Padre, we will have lunch.” Since very few worked those days, the confessions were often mini-counseling sessions. There was no rush for the people, but for the priest, there is no stopping.
One memorable moment came when a woman entered with her granddaughter. The little girl said, “Grandma wants me to translate for you, because she does not speak Spanish.” I did not want the little girl to hear her grandmother’s confession, so I told her to tell her grandmother, “Padre understands Mixteco. He just does not speak it.” The grandmother smiled and the little girl left the confessional. I thought, “Lord, you understand her, and I am sure that you already have forgiven her.” For the penance, I told her to pray three Hail Mary’s for her granddaughter.
My first Holy Week in Mexico was a week before I began studying Spanish in Mexico. I had a foundation in Spanish, but I certainly was not fluent. A man joked with another member or our mission team that he would confess in Otomi so Padre wouldn’t understand him. I told him not to worry, I probably would not understand his rapid Spanish either.
The days on mission are tiring, but for me, Holy Week in Mexico was awe inspiring. The devotion, the fasting and abstinence and the joy of the Holy Week celebrations cannot be duplicated here. I believe that my three experiences of Holy Week in Mexico gave me a foundation in the faith of migrants that serves so well working with migrants in the United States. Once one experiences the traditions of faith in another nation, one knows how important it is to bring those traditions to our communities here. Even if people come from another continent, they appreciate the efforts at celebrating cultural traditions of faith.

Oh Jesús, tú nos llamas: “Síganme”. Bendice, Señor, a todos los que acogen tu llamado. Puede que el camino no sea fácil, pero tenemos la confianza de que todo es posible si caminamos contigo. O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
