Alphonsus Liguori acababa de completar la misión napolitana de la Annunziata el 7 de mayo de 1730. Se derrumbó de fatiga al final de la misión. Algunos temían por su vida, quizás una reacción exagerada, pero necesitaba tiempo para refrescar su alma y recuperarse de la vida rigurosa que llevaba como predicador dinámico, misionero, confesor y maestro. Él y cinco de sus compañeros de misión hicieron un crucero de treinta y cinco millas desde Nápoles a Amalfi. La pequeña banda llegó a Amalfi y los lugareños los animaron a ir a Santa Maria dei Monti, donde había una pequeña capilla y una casa que podía acomodarlos.
Alphonsus respondió rápidamente al aire fresco y los alrededores pacíficos. Él y sus compañeros exploraron los alrededores de su retiro. La noticia de su llegada se difundió rápidamente. “Los pastores, cabreros y otras personas que vivían, dispersos por el campo, se apresuraron a encontrarlos”. [1] La banda misionera respondió a la gente celebrando misas, escuchando confesiones y ofreciendo enseñanzas católicas básicas. El ministerio que hizo este grupo de misioneros no fue planeado y parece que ninguno en el grupo se sintió agobiado por las necesidades que veían entre esta gente rural.
Lo que Alfonso experimentó fue más que la alegría de servir a los pobres. Reconoció “la gran necesidad espiritual que sufren tantas almas privadas de los sacramentos y de la Palabra, pudriéndose en estado de abandono en el campo y en los caseríos”. [2] Vio que “la gente del campo vivía en un estado de abandono mientras las ciudades rebosaban de sacerdotes ociosos”. [3] La exposición al abandono que enfrentan las personas en las comunidades rurales cambió el rumbo de la vida del santo al identificar a los “más abandonados” a quienes se sentía obligado a servir. Otros pueden haber sentido compasión por los pobres a quienes servían, pero Alfonso los vio como Cristo dijo de su propio llamado: “Me envió a predicar el evangelio a los pobres” [4].
Regresó a Nápoles por un corto tiempo, luego regresó con algunos compañeros para predicar una misión en Scala, del 6 al 14 de septiembre. Todavía no estaba listo para fundar la Congregación del Santísimo Redentor, pero los pobres del campo y Scala tocaron tanto el corazón de Alfonso que dos años después, dejaría Nápoles para siempre y comenzaría un nuevo capítulo en su vida, fundando a los Redentoristas. Una congregación entregada a las personas más abandonadas del mundo conocido por Alfonso.

Fr. Alphonsus Liguori had just completed the Neapolitan mission of the Annunziata on May 7, 1730. He collapsed in fatigue at the end of the mission. Some feared for his life, perhaps an overreaction, but he needed time to refresh his soul and to recuperate from the rigorous life he led as a dynamic preacher, missionary, confessor and teacher. He and five of his mission companions took a thirty-five-mile cruise from Naples to Amalfi. The small band arrived in Amalfi and locals encouraged them to go to Santa Maria dei Monti, where there was a small chapel and a house that could accommodate them.
Fr. Alphonsus responded quickly to the fresh air and the peaceful surroundings. He and his companions explored the surroundings of their retreat. The news of their arrival spread rapidly. “The shepherds, goatherd, and other people who lived, dispersed through the countryside, hurried to meet them.”[1] The mission band responded to the people by saying Masses, hearing confessions and teaching basic catholic teaching. The ministry that this band of missionaries did was not planned and it appears that none in the group felt burdened by the needs that they saw amongst these rural people.
What Alphonsus experienced was more than the joy of serving the poor. He recognized “the great spiritual need from which so many souls suffer, deprived as they are of the sacraments and the Word, rotting in a state of abandon in the countryside and rural hamlets.”[2] He saw that “the country people lived in a state of abandon while the cities were overflowing with idle priests.”[3] The exposure to the abandon faced by people in rural communities changed the direction of the saint’s life as he identified the “most abandoned” whom he felt compelled to serve. Others may have felt compassion for the poor whom they served, but Alphonsus saw them as Christ said of his own calling, “He sent me out to preach the gospel to the poor.”[4]
He returned to Naples for a short time, then returned with a few companions to preach a mission in Scala, September 6-14. He was not yet ready to found the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer, but the rural poor and Scala so touched the heart of Alphonsus that two years later, he would leave Naples for good and begin a new chapter in his life, founding the Redemptorists amongst the most abandoned people of his known world.
