“How I would like a Church which is poor and for the poor!”

The words of Pope Francis at the beginning of his papacy, sound like the words of our Redemptorist founder, St. Alphonsus Liguori. His commitment to the poor was often tested, even by his own confreres. Many of the early members of the congregation came and left. It was not clear in the early years that this congregation would survive. Choosing to live and work with the poor was not a pious platitude for Alphonsus. Life was not easy for the early members.

It is challenging to consider what it means to be “poor and for the poor”. Some people struggle with the idea of being poor, and what that means. Does it mean taking on all the hardships of the poor? In the Beatitudes, Jesus says, “Blessed are the poor in spirit”. My greatest blessing in ministry has been walking with people on the fringes of society, the poor who do not lose heart because of hardship or poverty. Being “for the poor” teaches lessons about poverty that need reflection. There are poor people who give up in the face of hardship. Yet, the poor who hang onto their dignity and continue to live in loving relationships are the ones who inspire us.

Jesus, saw the good, the hope and the faith of the poor. He exposed their dignity as he recognized their faith, their tenacity, their openness to him. Pope Francis speaks of the poor, seeing them as his flock. He says that we need to be like a field hospital caring for the wounded of the world. It all begins with recognizing the person, not simply recognizing the poverty. We need to see poor, the weak, the ill, the prisoner, the migrant, the poor as fully human and worthy of dignity.

Being poor is not passive. It is an experience of need. May the noble people of poverty who work in poor conditions, for low pay and little recognition be the beneficiaries of our love and care. Let us ask God for the grace to be “poor and for the poor.”

O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
