Cuando era director del Ministerio Campesino en Fresno, tuve la oportunidad de conocer a algunos de los primeros miembros del sindicato UFW. Joe Tobin, C.SS.R. fue nuestro Superior General y ahora es el Cardenal Tobin en Newark, New Jersey.

Recientemente, un miembro del sindicato me llamó y me contó sobre varios sacerdotes que ayudaron a la unión, pero llamó atención especial de P. Tobin y varios otros redentoristas. José estuvo presente en muchas marchas y reuniones sindicales, pero también realizó los matrimonios de muchos de los organizadores y bautizó a muchos de sus hijos.

When I was the director for Campesino Ministry in Fresno, I had the opportunity to meet some of early members of the United Farm Workers. I knew that some of my Redemptorist confreres were involved with Cesar Chavez in the early days of the union. One woman talked with me about the early days when there was the boycott of grapes and later lettuce and certain wineries. I asked her if there were priests who helped the workers. She named several priests. She said that they were essential in making progress for the rights of workers. She said that her favorite was Padre Joe. I asked Fr. Joe who? She said, “Fr. Joe Tobin”. He was a Redemptorist, and we always called him “West Coast Joe Tobin.” That was to distinguish him from a younger Fr. Joe Tobin, C.SS.R. who was our Superior General and now is Cardinal Tobin in Newark, NJ.
I asked, “Why was Fr. Joe your favorite?” She said that he went into the fields with us to sign people up for the union. “He marched with us. When we were arrested, he was arrested with us. When all we had to eat was beans and tortillas, he ate beans and tortillas.” As she spoke about Fr. Joe, it was clear that he truly walked with the campesinos.
Not long ago, a union member called me and told me about several priests who helped the union, but he called special attention to Fr. Tobin and several other Redemptorists. In all their cases, they were admired for their presence with the union during the early years of the union. Fr. Joe was present for many union marches and meetings, but he performed the marriages of many of the union organizers and baptized many of their children.
I remember as a seminarian that Fr. Joe informed us about the situations of the workers. Our role in helping the farm workers was to be catechists preparing children for their First Communion. Fr. Joe and several others inspired us to work with migrants.

May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
