Prepara el Camino del Señor
Ahora hemos pasado el “Black Friday”, ¿podemos tomarnos un tiempo para “preparar el camino del Señor”? Mi Adviento más memorable ocurrió en 2006. Fue un año que nunca olvidaré. Comenzó bien, pero hubo grandes desafíos para nuestra comunidad migrante / inmigrante antes de Navidad. Hoy, déjame contarle sobre nuestro buen comienzo.
Era costumbre que nuestros candidatos a la Confirmación dedicaran veinte horas de servicio a la Iglesia o la comunidad. Cuando comenzaron las clases, les pedí a los estudiantes que aceptaran un desafío. En lugar de las horas de servicio comunitario, le pedí a la clase de Confirmación que hiciera el carro alegórico de nuestra parroquia para el desfile anual de Navidad. Les dije a los estudiantes que nuestro carro alegórico no debería tener lugar para Santa Claus, Frosty the Snowman u otras imágenes seculares de la Navidad. Tampoco había lugar para la presencia del niño Jesús en nuestro carro. El tema de nuestro carro alegórico fue Adviento. Cómo nos preparamos para la Navidad. Desafié a los jóvenes a ganar uno de los principales premios a la mejor carroza ofrecidos por los Jaycees.
“Cómo San Antonio prepara el camino del Señor”
En el frente de un remolque de plataforma, estaba el cerro de Tepeyac. En el cerro había una joven como Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe. Con ella estaba Juan Diego. Desde el cerro, había un camino hacia la casa del Obispo de México. Estudiantes representaron al obispo y dos sirvientes. Al final de la carroza había dos bateristas. Detrás de la carroza venían treinta matachines. Detrás de los matachines iban José y María buscando posada en Belén. Después de José y María, cuarenta jóvenes con velas representaban la celebración de la Posada.
Nuestra parroquia siempre estuvo activa durante el Adviento con las celebraciones de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe y los nueve días de la Posada. Nuestro carro alegórico ganó el premio al mayor número de participantes. Tres días después del desfile, hubo un encuentro ecuménico de pastores. Todos admiraron nuestra presentación parroquial de Adviento. Complementaron el enfoque en preparar el camino del Señor.
Ese año, el primer domingo de Adviento fue el día después del desfile. Fue fácil recordarle a la gente el significado de Adviento, felicitar a la clase de Confirmación y anunciar nuestros eventos para la Fiesta de la Virgen y las Posadas.
Que este sea un momento bendecido para que todos preparen el Camino del Señor.

Prepare the Way of the Lord
Now that “Black Friday” is past, can we take time to “prepare the way of the Lord”? My most memorable Advent happened in 2006. It was a year that I will never forget. It began well, but there were major challenges to our migrant/immigrant community before Christmas. Today, let me tell you about our good beginning.
It was customary for our Confirmation candidates to dedicate twenty hours of service for the Church or community. When the classes began, I asked the students to take on a challenge. In place of community service hours, I asked the Confirmation class to make our parish float for the annual Christmas parade that took place on the first Saturday evening of December in Liberal. I told the students that there should be no place on our float for Santa Claus, Frosty the Snowman or other secular images of Christmas. There also was no place for the presence of the infant Jesus on our float. The theme for the float was Advent, how we prepare for Christmas. I challenged the young people to win one of the top prizes for best float offered by the Jaycees.

On the front of a flatbed trailer, there was the hill of Tepeyac. On the hill was a young woman as Our Lady of Guadalupe. With her was Juan Diego. From the hill, there was a path to the house of the Bishop of Mexico. Students represented the Bishop and two servants. At the end of the float were two drummers. Behind the float came thirty matachines (indigenous dancers). Behind the dancers came Joseph and Mary seeking lodging in Bethlehem. Following Joseph and Mary there were forty youth with candles representing the celebration of Posada.
Our parish was always active during Advent with our celebrations of Our Lady of Guadalupe and the nine days of the Posada. Our float won the prize for the most participants. Three days after the parade, there was an ecumenical meeting of pastors. All admired our parish presentation of Advent. They complemented our focus on preparing the way of the Lord.
That year, the first Sunday of Advent was on the day after the parade. It was easy reminding people of the meaning of Advent, congratulating the Confirmation class and announcing our events for the Feast of the Virgin and the Posadas.

Oh Jesús, tú nos llamas: “Síganme”. Bendice, Señor, a todos los que acogen tu llamado. Puede que el camino no sea fácil, pero tenemos la confianza de que todo es posible si caminamos contigo. Que este viaje nos abra los ojos a las maravillas de tu amor por nosotros. Oramos por toda tu gente, por todos los creyentes e incrédulos, por los líderes y seguidores. Oramos por la sanación, el perdón, la compasión, la justicia y la paz. Oramos para que, al seguirte, nosotros también podamos ser pescadores de hombres. Bendícenos en nuestro viaje.
O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
