¡Viva Cristo Rey!

For those who suffer religious persecution

Pope Pius XI instituted the feast of Christ the King in response to religious persecution in 1925. I often thought of the age of martyrs being long past, but as we consider martyrs of the last 100 years, we must realize that anti-Catholic and anti-clerical persecution is very much a part of our lives. Today, I remember the martyrs of the 20th century. Recent celebrations of beatifications and canonizations by Popes John Paul II, Benedict and Francis make it clear that martyrdom is very much present in modern times. The martyrs of the Cristiada (1920’s), martyrs in Spain (1930’s), the Jewish and Christian martyrs of World War II, Ukrainian martyrs and martyrs in Asia (1940’s and ’50’s, the Salvadoran martyrs including the Maryknoll sisters, Archbishop Oscar Romero, and the Jesuits (1980’s and 1990’s), martyrs in the Philippines and others in Asia, Africa and the Americas make it clear that martyrdom continues in our time.

Humbly today, let us work pray for those who suffer religious persecution. Long live Christ the King!

O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
