Mi Familia Campesina
Hace dos meses, no estaba seguro de mi futuro. Tenía varias opciones, y cada una era muy buena y convincente. En ese momento, estaba reflexionando sobre mis cincuenta años como sacerdote y misionero. Un amigo dijo: “¿Haga lo que quieres hacer? Tú conoces el ministerio que más amas. Lánzate por completo a ese ministerio, ya que será tu última oportunidad de hacer lo que amas”. Supongo que es un buen consejo ya que considero mis “últimos años en el ministerio”.
Fui a Yuma, Arizona para visitar a los campesinos migrantes, recogiendo verduras para nuestras ensaladas. Cosecharon repollo, lechuga, brócoli y todo lo bueno que forma parte de una dieta saludable. Al encontrarme con los trabajadores a las 3:00 am cuando subían a los buses para ir al campo, me di cuenta que estaba con mi familia.
Todo ministerio es bueno y he tenido el privilegio de trabajar en muchos aspectos del servicio a la Iglesia, pero después de quince años trabajando en el Ministerio Hispano y un año sabático que incluyó un verano recogiendo cerezas, encontré mi hogar con campesinos. Muchos decían que tenía un “hogar humilde” en México y California, pero ese verano las palabras significaron más para mí. Desde ese año sabático, el ministerio de campesinos ha sido parte de mi trabajo.
Después de mi visita a Yuma, quería una oportunidad de trabajar a tiempo completo en el ministerio de trabajadores agrícolas migrantes. Me doy cuenta de que mi historia con los campesinos siempre ha traído la mayor alegría en mi vida. Durante trece años, ofrecí una misión sacramental para campesinos en The Dalles, Oregón. Muchas veces he dicho que “trabajo once meses al año en otros ministerios para pasar un mes al año con mi familia de trabajadores migrantes”.
Cuando salí de Yuma, hablé con el director de la Red Católica de Ministerio Campesino y me dijo que necesitaba ayuda de su personal, y supe que ahí era donde mi corazón quería ir. Ni siquiera hubo una descripción del trabajo o una decisión final de que se establecería un puesto. Tengo un trabajo interino en la oficina del Apostolado Hispano de la Diócesis de Baton Rouge. Es un trabajo excelente, usando mi experiencia, pero solo me estoy preparando para el sacerdote de tiempo completo que viene aquí en abril. Pronto, sin embargo, espero anunciar un trabajo con RCMC.

My Campesino Family
Two months ago, I was uncertain about my future. I had several options, and each was very good and compelling. At the time, I was reflecting on my fifty years as a priest and missionary. A friend said, “Do what you want to do? You know the ministry that you love the most. Throw yourself completely into that ministry, since it will be your last chance to do what you love.” I guess that is good advice as I consider my “senior years in ministry”.
I went to Yuma, Arizona to visit migrant farm workers, picking vegetables for our salads. They harvested cabbage, lettuce, broccoli and all the good things that are part of a healthy diet. Meeting workers at 3:00 am as they boarded buses to go to the fields, I realized that I was with my family.
All ministry is good, and I have been privileged to work in many aspects of Church service, but after fifteen years working in Hispanic Ministry and a sabbatical year that included a summer picking cherries, I found my home with migrant farm workers. Many said that I had a “humble home” in Mexico and California, but that summer the words meant more to me. Since that sabbatical, farmworker ministry has been part of my work.
After my visit to Yuma, I wanted an opportunity to work full time in migrant farm worker ministry. I realize that my history with migrant workers has always brought out the most joy in my life. When I offered a sacramental mission for farm workers in The Dalles, Oregon, I told people that “I work eleven months of the year in ordinary Church ministries so that I can spend one month of the year with my migrant worker family.”
As I left Yuma, I spoke with the director for the Catholic Migrant Farmworker Network and he told me that he needed help on his staff, and I knew that this was where my heart wanted to go. There was not even a job description or a final decision that a position would be established. I have an interim job in the office of the Hispanic Apostolate for the Diocese of Baton Rouge. It is an excellent job, using my experience, but I am only preparing for the full-time priest coming here in April. Soon, though, I hope to announce a job with CMFN.
I give thanks to God each day for opportunity to serve my beloved family, the migrant and immigrant rural workers. Peace and prayers.

Oh Jesús, tú nos llamas: “Síganme”. Bendice, Señor, a todos los que acogen tu llamado. Puede que el camino no sea fácil, pero tenemos la confianza de que todo es posible si caminamos contigo. Que este viaje nos abra los ojos a las maravillas de tu amor por nosotros. Oramos por toda tu gente, por todos los creyentes e incrédulos, por los líderes y seguidores. Oramos por la sanación, el perdón, la compasión, la justicia y la paz. Oramos para que, al seguirte, nosotros también podamos ser pescadores de hombres. Bendícenos en nuestro viaje.
O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
