More than Apologetics – Más que apologética

La evangelización es más que apologética
Cuando comencé a trabajar en la comunidad hispana, tenía que observar la fe cultural mexicana y a posponer el juicio de la fe hasta que caminé con la gente durante un período significativo. No sabía en ese momento que “caminar con mi pueblo” sería tan formativo de mi vida con los hispanos. Dedicaba mucho tiempo participando en celebraciones culturales. Era nuevo para mi, y me forzaba considerar mi propia herencia en la fe de mi familia.
Recientemente, alguien me preguntó sobre el lugar de la apologética al responder a las preguntas de gente protestante. Al considerar la pregunta, me doy cuenta de que es importante responder a las preguntas fundamentales sobre la iglesia y nuestras creencias, pero la evangelización es más que la apologética. Antes de considerar las prácticas inculturadas de evangelización, ponemos atención a nuestra comprensión de evangelización en documentos del Papa Pablo VI y el Papa Juan Pablo II.
Del Papa Pablo VI en la Exhortación Apostólica, Evangelii Nuntiandi (8 de diciembre 1975):
Si bien la predicación y la catequesis son importantes en la evangelización, el Papa Pablo VI llama atención al testimonio de fe que se ve en la vida de los fieles. Caminando con migrantes e inmigrantes de muchas culturas, se necesita humildad y paciencia: humildad para reconocer nuevas formas de encontrar a Dios y paciencia para permitir que las prácticas iluminen nuestro camino hacia nuevas percepciones sobre lo divino en nuestras vidas.
22. Kerygma, predicación o catequesis— adquiere un puesto tan importante en la evangelización que con frecuencia es en realidad sinónimo. Sin embargo, es solo un aspecto de la evangelización.
23. Aquellos cuya vida se ha transformado entran en una comunidad que es en sí misma signo de la transformación, signo de la novedad de vida
24. El que ha sido evangelizado evangeliza a su vez. He ahí la prueba de la verdad, la piedra de toque de la evangelización: es impensable que un hombre haya acogido la Palabra y se haya entregado al reino sin convertirse en alguien que a su vez da testimonio y anuncia.
26. No es superfluo recordarlo: evangelizar es, ante todo, dar testimonio, de una manera sencilla y directa, de Dios revelado por Jesucristo mediante el Espíritu Santo. Testimoniar que ha amado al mundo en su Verbo Encarnado, ha dado a todas las cosas el ser y ha llamado a los hombres a la vida eterna.
Del Papa Juan Pablo II:
El Papa Juan Pablo II consideró la Evangelii Nuntiandi al dirigirse a los obispos de América Latina cuando llamó a una nueva evangelización que es nueva en su “ardor, métodos y expresión”. (San Papa Juan Pablo II: Discurso al CELAM, en Haití, 1983.) Como acabamos de completar nuestras celebraciones por Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe, recordamos que el Papa Juan Pablo II describió los eventos de Guadalupe como “un modelo de la evangelización perfectamente inculturada”. (Homilía por la canonización de San Juan Diego, 2002)
La catequesis y la apologética es parte de nuestra experiencia de evangelización, pero la experiencia de dejar que las expresiones de fe, particularmente las provenientes de culturas distintas a la propia, nos lleve a una nueva comprensión de las maravillas de Dios caminando con nosotros.

Evangelization is more than apologetics
When I started working in the Hispanic community, I had to observe the cultural faith of Mexico and to hold off judgment about the faith of our people until I walked with the people for a significant period of time. I did not know at the time that “walking with my people” would be so formative of my life with Hispanic Catholics. I spent a lot of time participating in cultural celebrations. It was new to me, and it forced me to consider my own heritage in the faith of my family.
Recently, someone asked me about the place of apologetics in responding to questions people ask about our faith. As I consider the question, I realize that it is important that we answer fundamental questions about or church and our beliefs, but there is more to evangelization than apologetics. Before considering inculturated practices of evangelization, let us call attention to our Catholic understanding of evangelization in writings of Pope Paul VI and Pope John Paul II.
From Pope Paul VI in the Apostolic Exhortation, Evangelii Nuntiandi (Dec. 8, 1975):
While preaching and catechesis is important in evangelization, Pope Paul VI calls attention to the testimony of faith seen in the lives of the faithful. Walking with migrants and immigrants of many cultures, one needs humility and patience: humility to recognize new ways of encountering God and patience to let the practices illumine our way to new insights about the divine in our lives.
22. Kerygma, preaching or catechesis – occupies such an important place in evangelization that it has often become synonymous with it; and yet it is only one aspect of evangelization.
23. Those whose life has been transformed enter a community which is itself a sign of transformation, a sign of newness of life
24. The person who has been evangelized goes on to evangelize others. Here lies the test of truth, the touchstone of evangelization: it is unthinkable that a person should accept the Word and give himself to the kingdom without becoming a person who bears witness to it and proclaims it in his turn.
26. It is not superfluous to recall the following points: to evangelize is first of all to bear witness, in a simple and direct way, to God revealed by Jesus Christ, in the Holy Spirit, to bear witness that in His Son God has loved the world – that in His Incarnate Word He has given being to all things and has called men to eternal life.
From Pope John Paul II:
Pope John Paul II considered Evangelii Nuntiandi while addressing the Bishops of Latin America when he called new evangelization that is new in its “ardor, methods and expression.” (St. Pope John Paul, II: Address to CELAM, in Haiti, 1983.) As we have just completed our celebrations for Our Lady of Guadalupe, we recall Pope John Paul II describing the events of Guadalupe as “a model of perfectly inculturated evangelization.” (Homily for the canonization of St. Juan Diego, 2002)
Catechesis and Apologetics is part of our experience of evangelization, but the experience letting expressions of faith, particularly coming from cultures other than one’s own leads to new understanding of the wonders of God walking with us.
