Mission to a Wounded World:

Third theme: Jesus speaks to wounded people

Jesus taught in words and actions. Consider the many ways Jesus met wounded people. They were blind, lame, deaf, lepers, adulterers, thieves, Samaritans, foreigners, mourners, children and most were poor. On this day, let us learn from the Master, the blessing of meeting Christ in people on the fringes of society and the Church.

I have had the privilege to work with those Francis identifies as on the periphery. A fellow Redemptorist was asked by a reporter about working with the poor. He responded giving thanks to his religious superiors for allowing him to work with the poor. Other Redemptorists of great zeal serve the congregation is administration, formation and in other ministries that support our missions, but he was privileged to work completely amongst the poor. He referred to our being called “to be evangelized by the poor,” and that he was allowed to do so.

After hearing him, every time that I communicate with our finance officers, administrative staff and my provincial superiors, I thank them for all that they do, because they allow me the privilege to walk with the poor every day.

Pope Francis says that “the poor have a special openness to the faith.” (EG. 200) Jesus recognized the faith in people who were not of the Jewish faith. In the stories of the Syrophoenician woman, the Samaritan woman, and the Roman soldier asking healing for his servant, Jesus recognizes their faith. Healings were given to people for their faith, some as a message of forgiveness and mercy, and some without the person even asking for healing.

Let us consider Jesus’ message to today’s woundedness.

O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
