Migrantes buscando Posada
Mientras celebramos Posadas en nuestros hogares e iglesias, consideremos a los migrantes que buscan refugio de las guerras, los desastres naturales, la persecución y el genocidio. Están en la frontera de México y Estados Unidos todos los días. Sus números son asombrosos y sus historias son desgarradoras. Visité albergues y centros de servicio en México de mayo a agosto. Las condiciones durante el verano son muy difíciles, pero a medida que nos enfrentamos al clima frío e invernal, es difícil imaginar sus condiciones. Algunos de los refugios pueden proteger a algunos migrantes, pero incluso en el mejor de los casos, solo puedo imaginarme del cinco al diez por ciento de los refugios que vi que pueden proteger a las personas en el frío que enfrentan las personas en el desierto alto desde Nogales hasta Nuevo Laredo. Los refugios de carpa en Reynosa ofrecen poca protección en este clima. La gran mayoría de los migrantes no tienen protección. Muchos vienen de países que no están acostumbrados a un invierno del norte, sin ropa para las pruebas que enfrentan hoy.
Mientras rezamos para los migrantes modernos, permítanme compartir una historia esperanzadora que tuvo lugar mientras una parroquia celebraba la fiesta de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe.
Una historia de posada migrante
Una pareja migrante llegó a un pueblo del suroeste de Kansas sin conocer a nadie. Se quedaron los primeros días en el hogar de una familia protestante que insistió en que asistieran a su iglesia mientras se establecían en el pueblo. La familia protestante le dijo a la pareja que no había iglesia católica en el pueblo. El día de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe, la pareja le preguntó a un cajero en un restaurante mexicano si había una iglesia católica en el área. El cajero les dijo de una parroquia a corta distancia de donde se estaban quedando. Fueron a la parroquia y conocieron a la Hermana que estaba haciendo preparativos para la misa de esa noche. Cuando sus anfitriones se aprendieron que fueron a la iglesia católica, los corrieron de su casa. Esa noche, la pareja asistió a la misa de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe. Alguien en la comunidad les ofreció un lugar donde quedarse. Cuando terminó la celebración, el esposo tomó la escoba y ayudó a recoger después del servicio. Un parroquiano le dijo que era nuestro huésped; él no necesitaba hacer eso. Sin embargo, el señor no soltaba la escoba. Su esposa también ayudó a lavar los trastes. Estaban agradecidos a la Virgen por haber encontrado su hogar en la iglesia católica de ese pueblo.
Varias mujeres los invitaron a ir a sus casas para las Posadas. Tanto el esposo como la esposa se unieron al coro parroquial. Dos semanas después estaban cantando en el coro para la misa de la Navidad.

Migrants seeking Posada
As we celebrate Posadas in our homes and churches, let us consider migrants seeking shelter from wars, natural disasters, persecution and genocide. They are on the border of Mexico and the United States every day. Their numbers are staggering, and their stories are heartbreaking. I visited shelters and service centers in Mexico from May to August. The conditions during the summer are very difficult, but as we face the cold, wintery weather, it is hard to imagine their conditions. Some of the shelters can protect a few migrants, but even at best, I can only imagine five to ten percent of the shelters that I saw being able to protect people in the cold that people are facing on the high desert from Nogales to Nuevo Laredo. The tent shelters in Reynosa offer little protection in this weather. The great majority of the migrants have no protection. Many come from countries unaccustomed to a northern winter, lacking clothing for the trials that they face today.
As we pray for today’s migrants, let me share a hopeful story that took place as a parish celebrated the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe.
A migrant posada story
One migrant couple arrived in a southwest Kansas town knowing no one in the area. They stayed the first couple days in the home of a Protestant family that insisted that they attend their church as they looked to get established in the town. They were told that there was no Catholic Church in the town. It was the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe when they asked a cashier at a local Mexican restaurant if there was a Catholic Church in the area. The cashier told them of a parish a short distance from where they were staying. They went to the parish and met the Sister that was preparing for the Mass and fiesta for that evening. When their hosts found out that they went to the Catholic Church, they were kicked out of their lodging. That evening, they went to the Mass. Someone in the community offered them a place to stay. When the celebration ended, the husband picked up a broom and helped clean up after the service. A parishioner told him that he was our guest; he did not need to do that. Nonetheless, he would not let go of the broom. His wife also helped wash the dishes. They were giving thanks to the Virgin for finding their home in the Catholic Church in the town.
Several women invited them to come to their homes for the Posadas. Both the husband and wife joined the parish choir. Two weeks later they were singing in the choir for Christmas Midnight Mass.

Oh Jesús, tú nos llamas: “Síganme”. Bendice, Señor, a todos los que acogen tu llamado. Puede que el camino no sea fácil, pero tenemos la confianza de que todo es posible si caminamos contigo. Que este viaje nos abra los ojos a las maravillas de tu amor por nosotros. Oramos por toda tu gente, por todos los creyentes e incrédulos, por los líderes y seguidores. Oramos por la sanación, el perdón, la compasión, la justicia y la paz. Oramos para que, al seguirte, nosotros también podamos ser pescadores de hombres. Bendícenos en nuestro viaje.
O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
