(EG. 200)

Listen to the poor

Yesterday, I wrote about a family who homeschooled their children for reception of sacraments. The pastor accepted the children for the sacraments and praised them for taking seriously their “responsibility for training their children in the faith.” It was a family known and active in the parish.

While preaching a parish mission in Arkansas, a family invited our mission team for dinner and the mother asked, “Padre, why can´t our son Carlos receive his First Communion?” I asked her to explain. She said, “At our parish, religious education takes place an hour before Mass. We are only able to attend Mass once a month. We live twelve miles out of town. My husband only gets one Sunday a month off work. We only have one car and I do not drive. We attend Mass one Sunday a month. The catechist says that Carlos has not attended enough classes to receive Eucharist. But, Padre, he is ready.” I asked her to continue. She said, “In Mexico, I was a catechist. On the Sundays when we cannot go to Mass, after breakfast I pray the rosary with Carlos (9) and Lupita (6). After the rosary, I teach them using a catechism from Mexico.”

I talked with Carlos about the Eucharist and his mother did an excellent job preparing him. When the pastor heard the story, he responded well, saying, “That is wonderful that she is home schooling Carlos. Of course, we will have him added to the First Communion class.”

In both examples from yesterday and today, the pastors thanked the parents who were preparing their children in their homes. We congratulate parents who take seriously the responsibility of raising their children in the faith. The difference was that the poor family was not so well known in the parish. After many years working with the poor, the faith of the poor is not a surprise. When a poor family requests First Communion for their children, give them the courtesy to show their faith.

“The great majority of the poor have a special openness to the faith.” (EG. 200)
