June 21, 1973

It was an extraordinary day for me and nine of my classmates. After twelve years of study and walking with many other young men discerning our vocational path, we were ordained priests. As I look back, there was not a moment of deciding to be a Redemptorist or a priest. From the time of my birth and baptism to being ordained, my family, Redemptorists, teachers, classmates, friends, parishioners of Holy Name and every person who touched my life prepared me to become a Redemptorist missionary priest.

After my ordination every community where I worked received me, welcomed me, challenged me, taught me, laughed with me and cried with me. Youth ministry was a constant in my life. I walked with families in distress, especially with alcoholics and their families. The last thirty-two years, youth, migrants and immigrants expanded my experience of working with people on the periphery of society and the Church.

Thank you, to everyone who encouraged me and supported me on my path to the altar. No one becomes a priest alone. My fiftieth anniversary is a milestone, but the call to ministry continues. Pray for me as I begin working with the Catholic Migrant Farmworker Network.

In the next few days, I will consider three pivotal experiences of my life as a priest. They are stories that I have written about several times, but there were three pivotal times in ministry that clarify my being a Redemptorist missionary priest.

O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
