“Immigration is not a problem to be solved.”

“Immigration is not a problem to be solved.” It is a reality that is a challenge and an opportunity. As citizens of the United States, we live in a nation of proud heritage. Pilgrims, immigrants, patriots, and pioneers played an important role in founding this nation. We cherish the memories of immigrants coming through Ellis Island, New Orleans and other ports of entry. Our cities, towns and farming communities received immigrants and formed communities identified by language, nationality and faith.

We proudly proclaim on the Statue of Liberty, “Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, the wretched refuse of your teeming shore.  Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me.” We have struggled to recognize that along with pride in our diversity, we carry the scars of our failure to recognize others as our brothers and sisters.

Migrant Ministry needs to be a portal in the endeavors of our Catholic community to welcome the migrant and immigrant. Let us begin by considering, “Who is our neighbor?”

O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
