Honra a tus santos
¿Quiénes son las personas que han tenido el mayor impacto positivo en su vida? Son los santos que reconocemos en el Día de Todos los Santos. Nuestros “santos” pueden no haber sido personas perfectas, pero cuando se necesitaba motivación, inspiración y apoyo, lo lograron. En mi vida hay muchas personas que me inspiraron y me guiaron hacia cualquier bien que pudiera lograr en la vida. Los invito a considerar a sus santos. Éstos son algunos de los míos:
Hermana Mary Compasión, OSM
La hermana Mary Compasión me enseñó en grado tercero. Realmente vivió su nombre. Sucedió que algunos de nosotros estábamos jugando donde se suponía que no debíamos jugar. Lancé una pelota de béisbol sobre la cabeza de mi compañero de clase más alto y atravesó la ventana de nuestro salón de clases. Mi madre le prometió a la hermana que yo no estaría jugando a la pelota donde no íbamos a jugar y que mi abuelo arreglaría la ventana. La hermana le dijo a mi madre que no se preocupara por mí y que algún día sería sacerdote. No sé cómo tuvo esa idea, pero cuando estaba dando mi primera bendición a la gente después de mi Primera Misa, ella dijo: “Siempre pensé que serías sacerdote”.
Abuelo McAndrew
Honró el sacerdocio. El día después de mi ordenación, mi familia condujo a casa desde Waterford, Wisconsin a Omaha. Recorrimos 500 millas en un automóvil sin aire acondicionado y hacía casi 100 grados. Al llegar a casa, después de ponerme el traje y el cuello, fuimos a ver a la abuela y al abuelo. Cuando llegamos al apartamento, pudimos ver mi abuelo parado en la puerta esperando que su nieto, el sacerdote, llegara a la puerta. Cuando llegué a la puerta, se puso de rodillas y dijo: “Padre, dame tu bendición”. A partir de ese momento, siempre me llamó “Padre Mike”. Cuando mi tío Marty me llamó “Mike”, mi abuelo lo regañó diciendo: “Marty, es el padre Mike”. Me dijo: “Padre Mike, será un buen sacerdote. Podría oírle”. Me hizo saber la importancia de hablar con claridad y en voz alta.

Fue mi primer pastor y rector después de salir el seminario. No obtuve buenas calificaciones de él cuando enseñó inglés en el seminario, y no me entusiasmó ir a mi primera asignación con él como mi rector. Rápidamente dejó de ser mi antiguo maestro para ser tratado como un igual en la comunidad. Al principio, no pude dejar de llamarlo Padre. Después de la tercera o cuarta vez, dijo: “Mike, ya no soy tu maestro. Llámame Marty”. Tuve la suerte de tenerlo como mi primer rector.
Hay muchos otros, comenzando por los más obvios: padres, abuelos, tías y tíos, y personas con vidas inspiradoras. Lo más importante para mí son los santos vivos entre los pobres y desfavorecidos. La fe de las personas marginadas de la sociedad, que aman a sus hijos y a su familia, me inspiran todos los días. Hoy y mañana recuerden a sus santos y seres queridos de una manera especial.

Honor your saints
Who are the people who have made the most impact for good in your life? They are the saints we recognize on All Saints Day. Our “saints” may not have been perfect people, but when motivation, inspiration and support was needed, they came through. In my life there are many people inspired me and guided me to any good that I may accomplish in life. I invite you to consider your saints. Here are a few of mine:
Sister Mary Compassion, OSM
Sister Mary Compassion taught me in third grade. She truly lived her name. It happened that some of us were playing ball where we were not supposed to play. I threw a softball over the head of my tallest classmate and it went through our classroom window. My mother promised Sister that I would not be playing ball where we were not to play and that my grandfather would fix the window. Sister told my mother not to worry about me and that someday I would be a priest. I do not know how she had that idea, but when I was giving my first blessing to people after my First Mass, she said, “I always thought you would be a priest.”
Grandpa McAndrew
He honored priesthood. The day after I was ordained, my family drove home from Waterford, Wisconsin to Omaha. We went 500 miles in a car with no air conditioning and it was nearly 100 degrees. On arriving home, after changing into my suit and collar, we went to see Grandma and Grandpa. As we came to the apartment, we could see Grandpa standing at the door waiting for his grandson, the priest, to come to the door. As I came to the door, he went to his knees and said, “Father, give me your blessing.” From that moment on, he always called me “Father Mike”. When my uncle Marty called me “Mike”, Grandpa scolded him saying, “Marty, he is Father Mike.” He told me, “Fr. Mike, you will be a good priest. I could hear you.” He let me know the importance of speaking clearly and loud.

He was my first pastor and rector after leaving the seminary. I did not get good grades from him when he taught English in the seminary, and I was not thrilled in going to my first assignment with him as my rector. He quickly stepped away from being my former teacher to being treated as an equal in the community. At first, I could not stop calling him Father. After the third or fourth time, he said, “Mike, I am no longer your teacher. Just call me Marty.” I was blessed to have him as my first rector.
There are so many others, beginning with the most obvious: parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles, and people with inspiring lives. Most important to me are the living saints amongst the poor and underprivileged. The faith of people on the margins of society, loving their children and family inspire me every day. Today and tomorrow remember your saints and loved ones in a special way.

Oh Jesús, tú nos llamas: “Síganme”. Bendice, Señor, a todos los que acogen tu llamado. Puede que el camino no sea fácil, pero tenemos la confianza de que todo es posible si caminamos contigo. Que este viaje nos abra los ojos a las maravillas de tu amor por nosotros. Oramos por toda tu gente, por todos los creyentes e incrédulos, por los líderes y seguidores. Oramos por la sanación, el perdón, la compasión, la justicia y la paz. Oramos para que, al seguirte, nosotros también podamos ser pescadores de hombres. Bendícenos en nuestro viaje.
O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
