Honor the past, adapt for today / Honra el pasado, adáptate al hoy

Honor the past, adapt for today

I asked a farmer about trends in agriculture today. He told me that one of the constants in agriculture is the need to adapt to change. He said, “Honor the past, and adapt for today.”

He showed me a vintage tractor that he used to take people on hayrides to see the fall colors in the woods. He said, “This was the only tractor we had on our farm in 1956. I learned to drive it when I was eight years old.” He then pointed to a tractor in the field, saying that it practically drove itself and cost a half million dollars. He went on to talk about changes in farming that have taken place in his lifetime. He considered his parents, grandparents and great grandparents who farmed the land before him. He called attention to the changes in agriculture they saw in their lifetimes, as they moved from plowing behind horses and oxen to the 1956 tractor of his childhood. He said, “Things are what they are. We are constantly adapting to the changing circumstances of production, legislation, climate, labor and changing markets. We adapt to the changes or we do not survive.”

Our methods for ministering to migrant farmworkers must be like the farmer, honoring our past, yet adapting to the changing conditions of migrant laborers of today.

O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
