Voy a Baton Rouge
Una de las preguntas más difíciles de responder para mí en los últimos tres años es: “¿Dónde vives?” Como Misionero Redentorista, mi comunidad está en Kansas City, pero durante tres años he sido un sacerdote ‘migrante’. Con eso quiero decir que he sido un trabajador temporal. He tomado el lugar de sacerdotes que se van a estudiar o por razones de salud durante tres o cuatro meses seguidos, y he tenido un par de asignaciones para estudiar el ministerio con migrantes en varias diócesis, incluidas las nueve diócesis de México en la frontera con los Estados Unidos.
Ahora estoy en camino a Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Ahora, estaré allí como el P. Kevin Zubel, C.Ss.R. se muda a Chicago como nuestro nuevo Superior Provincial. Esta podría ser mi ubicación durante varios meses. Después de tres años, me doy cuenta de lo desarraigado que estoy. Cuando le dije a un primo que estaba suplente en todo el país, me llamó ‘supersub’.
He trabajado con trabajadores migrantes durante muchos años, pero esta es una experiencia nueva para mí. Moverse por el país de un trabajo a otro, pasar varios meses en cada lugar me ha presentado un ministerio emocionante, pero también una sensación de no tener hogar. La pregunta, “¿Dónde vives?” no es fácil de responder después de pasar tres años moviéndose de una asignación temporal a otra.
Al comenzar mi asignación en Baton Rouge, es una asignación temporal hasta que un reemplazo más joven y de tiempo completo venga a ocupar mi lugar. Algunos amigos preguntan: “¿Te vas a jubilar?” Como sacerdote católico, no es tanto que no esté jubilado a los 75 años de edad, pero como no tengo hijos ni nietos, asumir asignaciones temporales es emocionante y puedo ver mucho no solo de este país, sino incluso el mundo. No está mal ser “Padre Migrante”.

A difficult question for me to answer over the past three years is: “Where do you live?” As a Redemptorist, my community is in Kansas City, but for three years, I have been a ‘migrant worker’ priest. By that, I mean that I have been a temporary worker. I have taken the place of priests going away for study or for reasons of health for three to four months at a time, and I have had a couple of assignments to study ministry with migrants in several dioceses including the nine dioceses of Mexico on the border with the United States.
Now, I am on my way to Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Now, I will be there as Fr. Kevin Zubel, C.Ss.R. moves to Chicago as our new Provincial Superior. This could be my location for several months. After three years, I realize how unrooted I am. When I told a cousin that I was substituting all over this country, he called me a ‘super-sub’.
I have worked with migrant workers for many years, but this is a bit of a new experience for me. Moving around the country from job to job, spending several months at each location has introduced me to exciting ministry, but also a sense of having no home. The question, “Where do you live?” is not easy to answer after spending three years moving from one temporary assignment to another.
As I begin my assignment in Baton Rouge, it is a temporary assignment until a younger, full-time replacement comes to take my place. Some friends ask, “Are you going to retire anytime soon?” As a Catholic priest, it is not so much that I am not retired at 75 years of age, but since I have no children or grandchildren, taking on temporary assignments is exciting and I get to see so much of not only this country, but even the world. It is not bad to be “Padre Migrante.”

Oh Jesús, tú nos llamas: “Síganme”. Bendice, Señor, a todos los que acogen tu llamado. Puede que el camino no sea fácil, pero tenemos la confianza de que todo es posible si caminamos contigo. Que este viaje nos abra los ojos a las maravillas de tu amor por nosotros. Oramos por toda tu gente, por todos los creyentes e incrédulos, por los líderes y seguidores. Oramos por la sanación, el perdón, la compasión, la justicia y la paz. Oramos para que, al seguirte, nosotros también podamos ser pescadores de hombres. Bendícenos en nuestro viaje.
O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
