“Salir de tu propia comodidad.” (EG. 20)
Como el Papa Francisco nos llama a “salir de nuestra propia comodidad”, es un llamado para que caminemos con las personas en los márgenes. Es caminar con personas que no tienen “comodidad”. Los migrantes se sienten tan incómodos con el lugar donde viven que comenzaron el viaje más inseguro de sus vidas. Hay peligros al ingresar a otro país, ya sea legalmente o no. El viaje por México puede ser bastante peligroso, con los medios de transporte y el contacto con elementos del crimen organizado. No hay promesa de que otra nación los acepte, pero los migrantes dejan su país de origen con esperanza.
Muchos inmigrantes en el pasado venían de la pobreza y la falta de oportunidades. Hoy en día, muchos migrantes de clase media, algunos con educación superior y carreras optan por emigrar por su propia seguridad personal o por la seguridad de sus familiares. Hay emigrantes económicos como en el pasado, pero el empuje para que la gente emigre hoy es más complicado que hace treinta años.
Tenga cuidado con las generalizaciones sobre por qué la gente emigra. Invito a los lectores de estos blogs a considerar qué desesperación podría moverlos a dejar su hogar, su comunidad, sus seres queridos, su nación por la esperanza de que otra nación los reciba. La decisión de emigrar en el ambiente antiinmigrante actual, no solo en los Estados Unidos sino en todo el mundo, es mucho más peligrosa que cuando comencé a trabajar con inmigrantes en 1991.

“Go forth from your own comfort zone.” (EG. 20)
As Pope Francis calls on us to, “Go forth from our own comfort zone,” it is a call for us to walk with people on the margins. It is to walk with people who have no “comfort zone”. Migrants have become so uncomfortable with where they live that they began the most unsafe journey of their lives. There are dangers entering another country, whether legally or not. The journey through Mexico can be quite dangerous, with the means of travel and contact with elements of organized crime. There is no promise that another nation will accept them, but migrants leave their country of origin with hope.
Many migrants in the past came from poverty and lack of opportunity. Today, many migrants who are middle class, some with higher education and careers choose to emigrate for their own personal safety or for the safety of their family members. There are economic emigrants as in the past, but the push for people to emigrate today is more complicated than thirty years ago.
Be careful of over generalizations of why people emigrate. I invite readers of these blogs to consider what desperation could move you to leave your home, your community, your loved ones, your nation for a hope that another nation may receive you. The choice to emigrate in today’s anti-immigrant environment, not just in the United States but around the world, is much more perilous than when I began working with migrants in 1991.
