Glad to be on a parish mission

It has been several years since preaching a parish mission of a complete week. Our mission began on Saturday with seven weekend Masses.

First day of the mission: In the gospel for Monday, Jesus spoke of being “light of the world.”

Choosing to live in the light, is choosing Christ. It is not choosing wealth, power or glory, but choosing 1. responsibility for one’s own life, 2. relationship with others for a common good, and 3. reverence for all that God has given us. In the gospel, Jesus proclaimed to be “the light”. The Pharisees heard him. They did nothing to him that day. Yet they did not choose the light. They did nothing to Jesus that day. They waited for the darkness.

Second day of the mission: The symbol for the second day is the CROSS. In the homily, I told the story of the life of Blessed Stanley Rother. As I reflected on his life, I said, “He did not choose the Cross, but he chose the Way of the Cross.” He knew the danger that he faced in returning to Guatemala as he faced known death threats. Saying that the “Shepherd does not abandon his flock,” he recognized danger in his return to Guatemala, but he chose to live his way of the cross.

Today, our mission continues as we reflect on the Word of God and the promise of new life.

O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
