Pescadores de hombres
En el Evangelio de Mateo, después de su bautismo por Juan, Jesús se fue al desierto para ser tentado por el diablo. Salió del desierto predicando: “Conviértense, porque ya está cerca el reino de los cielos”. Su mensaje fue el mismo que el mensaje de Juan el Bautista. Entonces, ¿en qué se diferenciaba el mensaje de Jesús del de Juan? Juan liberó a la gente de su pecado, pero Jesús les mostró más.
Después de llamar a los cuatro pescadores a convertirse en pescadores de hombres, Jesús “Andaba por toda Galilea, enseñando en las sinagogas, proclamando la buena nueva del reino de Dios y curando a la gente de toda enfermedad y dolencia.” El arrepentimiento es sólo el comienzo. El primer paso hacia la salvación.
Los Discípulos fueron testigos de la sanación, el perdón y la vida de amor. Jesús enseñó de una manera diferente a los fariseos. Mostró que era posible para los pecadores caminar en la fe, encontrar gozo en las dificultades de la vida, perdonar incluso cuando todo lo que nos rodea pide venganza. Los discípulos vieron caminar a los lisiados, oír a los sordos, ver a los ciegos, al recaudador de impuestos apartarse de la codicia, a la madre afligida recibir vivo a su hijo, y aun cuando uno de esos pescadores negó tres veces conocer a Jesús, pudo caminar con Jesús nuevamente.
Juan predicó el arrepentimiento y Jesús les mostró nueva vida. La historia de los pescadores no se trata simplemente de los Apóstoles, sino una indicación de lo que significa la llamada de Jesús para toda persona de fe. El mensaje de Jesús es eterno y a que se aplica a cada generación. Estamos llamados a llevar la Buena Nueva. Convirtámonos en “pescadores de hombres”.

Fishers of Men
In the Gospel of Matthew, after his Baptism by John, Jesus went into the desert to be tempted by the devil. He came away from the desert preaching, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” His message was the same as the message of John the Baptist. So, how was Jesus’ message different than that of John? John freed people from their sin, but Jesus showed them more.
After calling the four fishermen to become fishers of men, Jesus “went around all of Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom, and curing every disease and illness among the people.”Repentance is only the beginning. The first step towards salvation.
The Disciples witnessed healing, forgiveness, and life lived in love. Jesus taught in ways unlike the Pharisees. He showed that it was possible for sinners to walk in faith, to find joy in the hardships of life, to forgive even when all around us calls for revenge. The disciples saw the crippled walk, the deaf hearing, the blind seeing, the tax collector turn away from greed, the grieving mother receive her son alive, and even when one of those fishermen denied knowing Jesus three times, he could walk with Jesus again.
John preached repentance and Jesus showed them new life. The story of the fishermen was not simply about the Apostles, but an indication of what Jesus call means to every person of faith. The message of Jesus is timeless as it applies to every generation. We are called to bring the Good News. Let us become “fishers of men.”

Oh Jesús, tú nos llamas: “Síganme”. Bendice, Señor, a todos los que acogen tu llamado. Puede que el camino no sea fácil, pero tenemos la confianza de que todo es posible si caminamos contigo. Que este viaje nos abra los ojos a las maravillas de tu amor por nosotros. Oramos por toda tu gente, por todos los creyentes e incrédulos, por los líderes y seguidores. Oramos por la sanación, el perdón, la compasión, la justicia y la paz. Oramos para que, al seguirte, nosotros también podamos ser pescadores de hombres. Bendícenos en nuestro viaje.
O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
