Predicación de Juan, predicación de Jesús
El domingo prediqué en español. Mientras preparaba mi homilía, noté una diferencia entre la traducción del Evangelio al inglés y al español. Es una sola palabra, pero cuando hay una diferencia en las traducciones, por lo general se convierte en parte de mi homilía.
En la traducción de Mateo, Juan el Bautista dice: “Arrepiéntanse, porque ya está cerca el Reino de los cielos”. (Mt. 3:2) Cuando Jesús comenzó a predicar, dijo: “Conviértanse, porque ya está cerca el Reino de los cielos”. (Mt. 4:17) Hay diferencia en español. En la traducción en inglés, los dos dicen “Arrepiéntanse”. Exactamente lo mismo. Estoy más cómodo con la traducción al español porque creo que el mensaje de Juan y el mensaje de Jesús no era lo mismo. Y, la diferencia entre arrepentirse y convertirse es significativa.
En Juan, el penitente reconoce sus pecados pasados. Arrepentirse. El penitente pone su culpa delante de Dios. El penitente está aliviado de su pecado. Pero no hay visión presentada.
En el mensaje de Jesús, el bautizado está llamado a convertirse, a cambiar. Su mensaje mira hacia una vida que se vive para el reino de Dios. El discípulo acompaña a los pobres.
El bautismo de Jesús es más motivador. Él nos llama a vivir a la luz de la salvación. Después de llamar a los pescadores a ser ‘pescadores de hombres’, aprendieron lo que significa proclamar la palabra de Jesús: los ciegos ven, los sordos oyen, los lisiados andan y los pobres escuchan la buena nueva. El Bautismo de Jesús convierte los corazones.

On Sunday, I preached in Spanish. While preparing my homily, I noted a difference between the English and Spanish translation of the Gospel. It is only one word, but when there is a difference in the translations, it usually becomes part of my homily.
In the English translation of Matthew, John the Baptist says, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” (Mt. 3:2) When Jesus began to preach, he said, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” (Mt. 4:17) Exactly the same. In Spanish, John says “Arrepiéntanse“ (Repent) Jesus says, “Conviértense.” (Convert) I am more comfortable with the Spanish translation because I believe that the message of John and the message of Jesus was not the same. And, the difference between repent and convert is significant.
In John, the penitent recognizes his past sins. Repent. The penitent places his or her guilt before God. The penitent is relieved of the sin. But, there is no vision presented.
In Jesus message, the baptized is called to convert, to change. His message looks forward to a life that is lived for the reign of God. The disciple accompanies the poor.
Jesus’ baptism is more motivational. He calls on us to live in the light of salvation. After calling the fishermen to be ‘fishers of men’, they learned what it meant to proclaim the word of Jesus: the blind see, the deaf hear, the crippled walk and the poor hear the good news. The Baptism of Jesus converts our hearts.

Oh Jesús, tú nos llamas: “Síganme”. Bendice, Señor, a todos los que acogen tu llamado. Puede que el camino no sea fácil, pero tenemos la confianza de que todo es posible si caminamos contigo. Que este viaje nos abra los ojos a las maravillas de tu amor por nosotros. Oramos por toda tu gente, por todos los creyentes e incrédulos, por los líderes y seguidores. Oramos por la sanación, el perdón, la compasión, la justicia y la paz. Oramos para que, al seguirte, nosotros también podamos ser pescadores de hombres. Bendícenos en nuestro viaje.
O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
