La Pascua: Vida Nueva
Bendecir el fuego
El fuego es una imagen poderosa. Su poder de destrucción es espantoso. Su poder de purificar, de inspirar y de preparar el camino para una nueva vida se nos hace presente en la Vigilia Pascual. Vemos su fuerza en la naturaleza, no solo en California y el oeste, sino que ya hemos tenido cuatro incendios significantes, incluido el condado de Runnels, Texas, este año, donde he estado trabajando durante los últimos tres meses. La destrucción de la guerra y los incendios en Ucrania han aumentado la población de migrantes en el mundo en casi cinco millones de personas, en su mayoría mujeres y niños.
La Vigilia Pascual comienza con la bendición del fuego, para que la Iglesia sea “inflamada con los deseos celestiales”. En el Pregón Pascual escuchamos: “Goce también la tierra, inundada de tanta claridad, y que, radiante con el fulgor del rey eterno”. Oramos para que nuestros corazones ardan con nuestra fe, devoción y compromiso.
La fragancia del fuego de Pascua
Los fuegos de la destrucción y la guerra asaltan nuestros sentidos. El olor de tales fuegos es muerte y desesperación. El humo de nuestro Fuego Pascual se realza con incienso no solo para alabar a Dios, sino también para levantar el ánimo y movernos en una vida de fe. A medida que la fragancia entra en nosotros, le damos honor a Jesús y nos mueve a creer.
Las lecturas de Pascua
En las lecturas de Pascua recordamos nuestra creación y la Pascua del Pueblo de Israel. María Magdalena anunció a los discípulos que el Señor ha resucitado. Toda nuestra celebración de Pascua canta Aleluya a medida que pasamos de nuestro recuerdo cuaresmal de nuestros pecados pasados y la necesidad de la misericordia de Dios, a la confianza en su resurrección y el gozo que vivimos hoy con la promesa de vida eterna de Jesús.
Nueva vida después de una crisis
Los Apóstoles vieron a su amigo más cercano sufrir y morir el Viernes Santo, su compañero de un par de años, su maestro, el Maestro que daba sentido a sus vidas. Su vida estaba patas arriba. Fueron al aposento alto con miedo. Dos discípulos vagaban por el camino de Emaús. Pedro y Juan corrieron al sepulcro para ver qué les decía María Magdalena. La tumba estaba vacía. Durante ese día Jesús se mostró a su pequeño rebaño. Si bien no entendían todo lo que estaba sucediendo, sus vidas cambiaron. Algo muy nuevo estaba ocurriendo dentro de ellos.
Las historias del tiempo entre Pascua y Pentecostés pueden considerarse como las brasas que arden sin llama preparándose para el fuego que emerge en los discípulos y que ardió completamente en Pentecostés. Si consideramos Pentecostés el nacimiento de la Iglesia, la Pascua es el momento en que la crisis del Viernes Santo se convirtió a la fe que hoy nos guía.

Blessing the Fire
Fire is a powerful image. Its power to destroy is frightful. Its power to purify, to inspire and to prepare the way for new life is present to us in our Easter Vigil. We see it’s force in nature, not only in California and the West, but we have already had four significant fires including in Runnels County, Texas this year, where I have been working for the past three months. The fires and destruction of war in the Ukraine has increased the population of migrants in the world by nearly five million people, mostly women and children.
Our Easter Vigil begins with the blessing of fire, that the Church may be “inflamed with heavenly desires.” In the Exultet we hear, “Let earth be glad, as glory floods her, ablaze with light from her eternal King.” We pray that our hearts be on fire with our faith, devotion and commitment.
The Fragrance of the Easter Fire
The fires of destruction and war assault our senses. The smell of such fires is death and desperation. The smoke of our Easter Fire is enhanced with incense to not only give praise to God, but lifts our spirits to move us in lives of faith. As the fragrance enters us, we give honor to Jesus and moves us to believe.
The Easter readings
In the Easter readings we recall our creation and the Passover of the People of Israel. Mary Magdalene announced to the disciples that the Lord has risen. The whole of our Easter celebration sings Alleluia as we move from our Lenten remembrance of our past sins and need for God’s mercy, to confidence in his resurrection and the joy that we live today with Jesus’ promise of eternal life.
New Life after a crisis
The Apostles saw their closest friend, their companion of a couple years, their teacher, the Master who gave meaning to their lives suffer and die on Good Friday. Their life was upside down. They went to the upper room in fear. Two disciples wandered on the road to Emmaus. Peter and John ran to the tomb to see what Mary Magdalene told them. The tomb was empty. During that day Jesus showed himself to his little flock. While they did not understand everything that was taking place, their lives changed. Something very new was taking place within them.
The stories of the time between Easter and Pentecost may be pondered as the smoldering of embers preparing for the fire emerging in the disciples that came into full blaze at Pentecost. While Pentecost is our recognition of the beginning of the Church, Easter is moment when the crisis of Good Friday gave way to the faith that guides us today.

Oh Jesús, tú nos llamas: “Síganme”. Bendice, Señor, a todos los que acogen tu llamado. Puede que el camino no sea fácil, pero tenemos la confianza de que todo es posible si caminamos contigo. Que este viaje nos abra los ojos a las maravillas de tu amor por nosotros. Oramos por toda tu gente, por todos los creyentes e incrédulos, por los líderes y seguidores. Oramos por la sanación, el perdón, la compasión, la justicia y la paz. Oramos para que, al seguirte, nosotros también podamos ser pescadores de hombres. Bendícenos en nuestro viaje.
O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
