No regaña a la gente
Un amigo mío viaja mucho en su trabajo. Nunca falta a misa los domingos y disfruta escribiéndome sobre homilías interesantes que escucha de vez en cuando. Durante este tiempo de COVID, ha comentado de su tristeza por la disponibilidad limitada para asistir a Misa y las pruebas de nutrirse en un ambiente de separación y la falta de intimidad en las celebraciones de fe durante la pandemia. Su mayor angustia ocurrió recientemente cuando visitó una iglesia en sus viajes. Escribió: “El sacerdote regañó a la gente por faltar a las misas dominicales. Nunca he escuchado un sermón más insensible.”
Me recordó mi tiempo en la Diócesis de Fresno. Había una parroquia en la diócesis sin sacerdote. El pastor necesitó ayuda al principio por una enfermedad y luego se jubiló. Por diez meses, algunos sacerdotes ayudaron a celebrar misas los fines de semana. Yo celebré diez misas en esa parroquia. Antes de asignar a un nuevo pastor, el Deán de esa región se reunió con la gente para prepararla para la llegada del nuevo pastor. Una señora le dijo: “¿Porqué no nos manda al Padre Miguel”? El Deán les preguntó: ¿”Porqué quieren al Padre Miguel”? Ella le respondió: “Padre Miguel es un americano. No solo aprendió nuestro idioma, sino que estudió nuestra historia y le encantan nuestras prácticas religiosas y festividades. Cuando él explica de la historia de la conversión en México, salimos de Misa orgullosos de ser católicos”. Ella continuó: “Desafortunadamente, otros predicadores nos regañan y nos vamos tristes. Por favor, mándenos al Padre Miguel”.
No hay lugar para regañar a la gente cuando se predica en la Misa. Uno de los versículos más populares citados en las Escrituras es Juan 3:16, “¡Así amó Dios al mundo! Le dio al Hijo Único, para que quien cree en él no se pierda, sino que tenga vida eterna.” Para mí, es el siguiente versículo Juan 3:17 que es más convincente cuando se considera predicar el evangelio: “Dios no envió al Hijo al mundo pare condenar al mundo, sino para que se salve el mundo gracias a él.” Si Jesús no vino a condenar al mundo, tampoco debería hacerlo el predicador.
Un famoso misionero redentorista enseñaba a los jóvenes sacerdotes sobre la predicación diciendo: “Si alguien sale de la iglesia después de tu sermón creyendo que está condenado, no hiciste tu trabajo”. La evangelización es la presentación de la Buena Nueva a todo tiempo y a todas las naciones. Si escucha un sermón negativo y desalentador, diga una oración por el predicador.

Don’t scold people
A friend of mine travels a lot in his work. He never misses Mass on Sundays, and enjoys writing to me about interesting homilies that he hears from time to time. During this time of COVID, he has commented about his sadness at the limited availability to attend Mass and the trials of being nourished in an atmosphere of separation and the lack of intimacy of celebrations of faith during the pandemic. His most distress happened recently as he visited a church on his travels. He wrote, “All the priest did was chastise people who miss Mass on Sundays. It was the most insensitive sermon I have ever heard.”
It reminded me of my time in the Diocese of Fresno. There was a parish in the diocese with no priest. The pastor needed help at first because of illness, and later he retired. For ten months a few priests helped the parish on weekends for Masses. I celebrated Masses in that parish about ten times. The Dean of that region met with the people before assigning a new pastor. One Mexican woman said, “Why can’t you send us Fr. Mike?” The Dean asked, “Why do you want Fr. Mike?” She replied, “Fr. Mike is an American. Not only did he learn our language, he also studied our history and loves our religious practices and feasts. When he explains the story of conversion in Mexico, we leave Mass, proud to be Catholic.” She continued, “Unfortunately other preachers chastise us, and we leave sad. Please, send us Fr. Mike.”
There is no place for scolding people when preaching at Mass. One of the most popular verses quoted in scripture is John 3:16, “For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life.” For me, it is the following verse John 3:17 that is more compelling when considering preaching the gospel, “For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through him.” If Jesus did not come to condemn the world, neither should the preacher.
A famous Redemptorist mission preacher teaching young priests about preaching said, “If someone leaves the church after your sermon believing that they are condemned, you did not do your job.” Evangelization is the presentation of the Good News at all times to all nations. If you hear a negative, discouraging sermon, say a prayer for the preacher.

O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
