Descubriendo a los Trabajadores Migrantes en la Ciudad
Un trabajador campesino migrante se mudó a la ciudad cuando se jubiló. Su barrio incluía muchas familias con las que trabajaba en los campos. El barrio fue el hogar de sus hijos y las familias y otros hijos de trabajadores agrícolas. Los mayores se involucraron en la parroquia cercana. Los vecinos más jóvenes incluían personas que trabajaban en los campos, camioneros, empacadoras y construcción. Muchos de los trabajadores más jóvenes viajaban en su trabajo como sus padres, pero residían en la ciudad. Muchos de los hombres viajarían por su trabajo.
Cuando el hombre murió, su familia lo honró todas las noches, rezando el rosario por él. Lo hicieron en el garaje. Los hijos y nietos invitaron a sus amigos y vecinos. Después de un par de días, el grupo era demasiado grande para el garaje, así que colocaron una estatua de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe en el patio delantero y muchos en el barrio venían todas las noches a rezar el rosario. La novena noche celebré la Misa en el patio para la pequeña comunidad. En la comunión de la Misa, sólo los nietos del hombre comulgaron. Después de la Misa, la familia agradeció a todos los que participaron en los rosarios y la Misa.
Después de la Misa, varios de los niños vecinos pidieron que siguieran rezando el rosario una vez por semana en el patio, para que todos los miércoles vinieran. Después de tres semanas, una de las hijas del hombre me dijo que un miércoles vinieron más de treinta niños y me pidieron que me uniera a ellos. Cuando llegué, muchos de los niños de 7 a 12 años preguntaron qué necesitaban hacer para comulgar. Era el mes de mayo y los programas parroquiales para la Primera Comunión comenzarían en septiembre, pero en cuatro meses se pasaría el entusiasmo creado por los rosarios. Algunos de los padres que trabajaban en el campo preguntaron si podían tener clases durante el verano como los niños en las comunidades rurales. Algunos vecinos que eran catequistas de nuestros programas campesinos se ofrecieron para reunir a los niños durante diez semanas en el patio para prepararlos para la Primera Comunión.
El párroco y el director de educación religiosa se opusieron a la idea de tener un programa especial para los niños, pero en la diócesis, el obispo reconoció la oportunidad de proporcionar a estas familias los sacramentos de iniciación para niños que probablemente no puedan participar plenamente en los programas parroquiales y le dije al párroco que trabajara con mi oficina. La energía de los niños no decayó en los tres meses del verano, y cuando terminó las clases, 42 niños recibieron su Primera Comunión.
Los padres no eran todos trabajadores en los campos, pero todos trabajaban en trabajos que requerían muchos viajes y tiempos prolongados de cónyuges separados por días a la vez. A migrant farm worker moved into the city when he retired. His neighborhood included many families that he worked with in the fields. The neighborhood was home to his children and their families and other children of farm workers. The older folks became involved in the parish nearby. The younger neighbors included people working in the fields, truckers, packing houses, and construction. Many of the younger workers traveled in their work like their parents, but resided in the city. Many of the men would travel for their work
When the man died, his family honored him every evening, praying the rosary for him. They did so in the garage. The children and grandchildren invited their friends and neighbors. After a couple days the group was too large for the garage, so they put up a statue of Our Lady of Guadalupe in the front yard and the many in the barrio came each evening to pray the rosary. On the ninth evening, I celebrated Mass in the yard for the little community. At the communion of the Mass, only the grandchildren of the man received Communion. After the Mass, the family thanked all who participated in the rosaries and the Mass.
After the Mass, several of the neighbor children asked that they continue saying the rosary once a week in the yard, so every Wednesday they would come. After three weeks one of the man’s daughters told me that over thirty children came one Wednesdays and asked me to join them. When I came, many of the children from 7 to 12 years old asked what they needed to receive Communion. It was May at the time and the parish programs for First Communion would start in September, but in four months the enthusiasm created by the rosaries would pass. Some of the parents who worked in the fields asked if they could have classes during the summer like the children in the rural communities. A few neighbors who were catechists for our campesino programs volunteered to gather the children for ten weeks in the yard to prepare them for First Eucharist.
The pastor and the director of religious education balked at the idea of having a special program for the children, but at the diocese, the bishop recognized the opportunity to provide these families the sacraments of initiation for children unlikely to be able to participate fully in the parish programs and told the pastor to work with my office. The energy of the children did not wane in the three months of the summer, and after the classes, 42 children received their First Communion.
The parents were not all workers in the fields, but they all worked in jobs that required much travel and extended times of spouses separated for days at a time. As indicated yesterday, the migrant worker is anyone for whom travel separates family members for days at a time.
