Catholic Migrant Farmworker Network

In 1985, the Catholic Migrant Farmworker Network was organized to serve the spiritual needs of migrant farm workers. When I was Director for Campesino Ministry in Fresno, it provided me with important relationships with religious leaders, volunteers and farm workers from around the country. When I left Fresno to establish Hispanic ministry in the parish of my childhood in Omaha, I was not engaged with the CMFN for a time. I renewed contact with CMFN when working in rural Mississippi from 2015 to 2019.

There was a time when I was invited to be the Director of CMFN while I was in Mississippi, but it was not a good time for me to seek work on a national level. While I enjoy the substitute work that I have been doing for the past three years, I have yearned to reconnect with the migrant farm workers who have been so much a part of my life since 1996. Recently, I reconnected with CMFN, and hope to immerse myself in farm worker ministry again. It is not yet clear what that may mean, but while there are many ways that I may work in Hispanic Ministry, I once again wish to answer the cherry worker in The Dalles, Oregon who said, “Padre, we do not need you to be our lawyer, doctor or social worker. We need you to be our priest.”

Whether I work directly or indirectly with the CMFN, please pray for the ministry and my discernment into how I may serve farm workers again.

O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
