Reconocer lo bueno en las personas para que brille lo mejor

Cuando el Apóstol Felipe le habló a Natanael acerca de Jesús, dijo: “Hemos hallado a aquél de quien escribió Moisés en la Ley y también los profetas. Es Jesús, el hijo de José de Nazaret”. Nathanael le replicó: “¿Puede salir algo bueno de Nazaret?” Felipe le contestó: “Ven y verás”. Cuando Jesús vio venir a Natanael, dijo de él: “Ahí viene un verdadero israelita: éste no sabría engañar.”

Jesús vio el bien en Natanael. Mientras Natanael estaba cerrado a ver el bien en Jesús, las palabras de Jesús desarmaron su escepticismo. Al reconocer el bien y la fe en Natanael, se expuso el potencial de Natanael, y él podría ser mejor.

Hay demasiada negatividad expresada hoy en formas que desalientan a las personas de fe débil. Todos necesitan aliento en la fe. Necesitamos dejar de lado nuestra negatividad personal para dejar que brille lo “mejor”. Comienza por no ver la falta, sino ver el bien. Busquemos el bien y no enfoquemos a nuestras debilidades.

When the Apostle Philip told Nathanael about Jesus, he said, “We have found the one about whom Moses wrote in the law, and also the prophets, Jesus son of Joseph, from Nazareth.” Nathaniel responded, “Can anything good come from Nazareth?”   Philip said to him, “Come and see.” Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him and said of him, “Here is a true Israelite. There is no duplicity in him.”

Jesus saw the good in Nathanael. While Nathaniel was closed to seeing good in Jesus, the words of Jesus disarmed his skepticism. By recognizing good and faith in Nathanael, the potential of Nathanael was exposed, and he could be better.

There is too much negativity expressed today in ways that discourage people of weak faith. Everyone needs encouragement in faith. We need to put aside our personal negativity to let “better” shine. It begins by not seeing fault, but seeing good. Let us look for good and overlook our weaknesses.

Appreciating freedom / Apreciar la libertad

Apreciar la libertad

Sólo en libertad podemos amar. Incluso en los momentos más difíciles, somos capaces de ser amorosos, generosos y dispuestos a sacrificar hasta la vida por nuestros amigos. Jesús bendijo el sacrificio de la vida por sus amigos al acercarse a su Pasión y muerte. Hoy honramos a aquellos que se sacrificaron por la libertad de nuestra nación.

Habrá desfiles, celebraciones familiares, días de campo, políticos envolviéndose en banderas, pompa y fuegos artificiales para celebrar la libertad estadounidense. Celebramos la declaración de independencia de nuestra nación de Inglaterra. Fue una independencia proclamada pero difícil de conseguir. La Declaración fue sólo un primer paso hacia la libertad. Si bien era una declaración para todas las personas, muchas personas tuvieron que luchar y esperar para lograrlo. Todavía estamos luchando por lograr nuestra propia libertad y el coraje para proteger la libertad de los demás.

La libertad está limitada en muchas partes del mundo. Cuando vemos imágenes de refugiados que huyen de la guerra, el crimen organizado, los gobiernos corruptos, la esclavitud y la persecución, reconocemos la libertad que damos por sentada. Nos ponemos en peligro si no dedicamos tiempo a apreciar nuestras libertades.

Hace un año, estuve en México el cuatro de julio. Visitamos campamentos de migrantes y conocimos a personas dedicadas que ofrecen refugio a migrantes de muchas naciones que creían en la esperanza de libertad en otra tierra. Aquellos a quienes conocimos conocían la ausencia de libertad. Creían que había algo mejor, alguien mejor esperándolos mientras buscaban refugio en México o Estados Unidos. Los trabajadores de los centros de refugiados que visitamos se entregaron gratuitamente para aliviar el sufrimiento de las personas que carecen de libertad. Hablaron de los migrantes con amor y admiración.

Mientras celebramos nuestra libertad, oremos por todos los que carecen de las libertades que reconocemos en nuestras vidas.

Appreciating freedom

It is only in freedom that we can love. Even in the most difficult of times, we are able to be loving, generous and willing to sacrifice even life for our friends. Jesus blessed the laying down of one´s life for his friends as he approached his Passion and death. Today we honor those who sacrificed themselves for the freedom on our nation.

There will be parades, family celebrations, picnics, politicians wrapping themselves in flags, pageantry, and fireworks to celebrate American liberty. We celebrate the declaration of independence of our nation from England. It was an independence proclaimed but difficult to achieve. The Declaration was only a first step towards freedom. While being a declaration for all people, many people had to fight for and wait to achieve. We are still struggling to achieve our own freedom and the courage to protect the freedom of others.

Freedom is limited in many parts of the world. When we see images of refugees fleeing war, organized crime, corrupt governments, slavery and persecution we recognize the freedom that we take for granted. We place ourselves in danger if we do not take time to appreciate our freedoms.

A year ago, I was in Mexico on the fourth of July. We visited migrant camps and met dedicated people offering refuge to migrants from many nations who believed in the hope of freedom in another land. Those whom we met knew the absence of freedom. They believed that there was something better, someone better awaiting them as they sought refuge in Mexico or the United States. Workers in the refugee centers that we visited freely gave of themselves to alleviate the suffering of people lacking freedom. They spoke of the migrants with love and admiration.

As we celebrate our freedom, let us pray for all who lack the freedoms that we recognize in our lives.

Conciencia

Esta mañana, el aire era fresco, el sol brillaba intensamente, el aire fresco y una suave brisa alegraron mi caminata matutina. Los pájaros cantaban, los perros ladraban, los corredores y los ciclistas me saludaban al comenzar mi día. Había alegría en mi paso y paz en mi corazón. A medida en mi vejez, encuentro paz en mis caminatas matutinas, más paz que en las formas tradicionales de oración. Crecí con lecciones sobre la oración y la fe que me dieron en mi hogar, escuela e iglesia. Algunas de esas lecciones todavía me inspiran, pero a veces ya no me conmueven.

Las acciones y prácticas de oración en mi vida han cambiado a lo largo de los años. Aprecio el tiempo a solas con mis pensamientos y oraciones, pero de una manera diferente a las lecciones que aprendí en mis años de formación en el seminario. La meditación, silencio y la oración eran temas enseñados y practicados de formas que siempre me parecieron artificiales. Sobreviví nuestra formación en el seminario a través de la obediencia y con la esperanza de que me enseñaran a tener una buena relación con Dios, la Iglesia y mi comunidad religiosa. Mirando hacia atrás a 55 años como redentorista y 50 años como sacerdote, mi vida ha sido un viaje maravilloso.

Ha habido victorias y derrotas en el juego de la vida, pero al final, lo más importante es vivir en relación con Dios y toda la creación. Deberes, obligaciones, y poderes no son realmente importantes. Jesús tenía algo que decir al respecto.

Mateo 6:25-34:

“Por eso les digo: No anden preocupados por su vida con problemas de alimentos, ni por su cuerpo con problemas de ropa. ¿No es más importante la vida que el alimento y más valioso el cuerpo que la ropa? Fíjense en las aves del cielo: no siembran, ni cosechan, no guardan alimentos en graneros, y sin embargo el Padre del Cielo, el Padre de ustedes, las alimenta. ¿No valen ustedes mucho más que las aves? ¿Quién de ustedes, por más que se preocupe, puede añadir algo a su estatura? Y ¿por qué se preocupan tanto por la ropa? Miren cómo crecen las flores del campo, y no trabajan ni tejen. Pero yo les digo que ni Salomón, con todo su lujo, se pudo vestir como una de ellas. Y si Dios viste así el pasto del campo, que hoy brota y mañana se echa al fuego, ¿no hará mucho más por ustedes? ¡Qué poca fe tienen!?

No andan tan preocupados ni digan: ¿tendremos alimentos?, o ¿que beberemos? o ¿tendremos ropas para vestirnos? Los que conocen a Dios se afanan por esas cosas, pero el Padre del Cielo, Padre de ustedes, sabe que necesitan todo eso. Por lo tanto, busquen primero su reino y su justicia, y se les darán también todas esas cosas. No se preocupen por el día de mañana, pues el mañana se preocupará por si mismo. A cada día le bastan sus problemas.

Que todos aprovechen al máximo el día que nos ocupa.

Awareness

This morning, the air was crisp, the sun shone brightly, fresh air and a gentle breeze brought joy to my morning walk. Birds chirped, dogs barked, joggers and bicyclists offered greetings as my day began. There was a spring in my step and peace in my heart. As I have gotten older, I find peace on my morning walks, more peace than in traditional forms of prayer. I grew up with lessons on prayer and faith given to me in our home, school and church. Some of those lessons still inspire me, but sometimes the lessons no longer move me.

Actions and practices of prayer in my life have changed over the years. I appreciate time alone with my thoughts and prayers, but in a bit different way than the lessons I learned in my years of seminary formation. Meditation, quiet and stillness were themes taught and practiced in ways that I always found to be artificial. I survived our seminary formation through obedience and having hope that I could be taught to have a good relationship with God, the Church and my religious community. Looking back at 55 years as a Redemptorist and 50 years as a priest, my life has been a marvelous journey.

There have been wins and losses in the game of life, but in the end, what is most important is living in relationship with God and all of creation. Shoulds, musts, coulds and woulds are not really important. Jesus had something to say about this.

Mt. 6:25-34:

“Therefore, I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat [or drink], or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds in the sky; they do not sow or reap, they gather nothing into barns, yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are not you more important than they? Can any of you by worrying add a single moment to your lifespan? Why are you anxious about clothes? Learn from the way the wildflowers grow. They do not work or spin. But I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was clothed like one of them. If God so clothes the grass of the field, which grows today and is thrown into the oven tomorrow, will he not much more provide for you, O you of little faith?

So do not worry and say, ‘What are we to eat?’ or ‘What are we to drink?’ or ‘What are we to wear?’ All these things the pagans seek. Your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. But seek first the kingdom [of God] and his righteousness, and all these things will be given you besides. Do not worry about tomorrow; tomorrow will take care of itself. Sufficient for a day is its own evil.

 Let all make the most of the day at hand.

Llegué a The Dalles ayer por la tarde. Visité a algunos trabajadores migrantes que han trabajado en The Dalles durante más de veinte años. Fue tan bueno verlos. Varios de ellos tenían familiares que recibieron sacramentos de iniciación conmigo. Espero visitar a aquellos que formaron parte de nuestros programas en el pasado, para entrevistarlos sobre sus recuerdos de nuestras misiones sacramentales del 2000 al 2010. Hoy me dará la oportunidad de ver a muchos más de mis viejos amigos.

Arriving at The Dalles

I arrived in The Dalles yesterday evening. I visited a few migrant workers who have been coming to The Dalles for over twenty years. It was so good to see them. Several of them had family members who received sacraments of initiation with me. I look forward to visiting those who were part of our programs in the past, to interview them about their memories of our sacramental missions from 2000 to 2010. Today will give me the opportunity to see many more of my old friends.

Escuchar para entender

A menudo, me doy cuenta de que escucho a gente para enseñar, aconsejar o ayudar a los que buscan atención pastoral. Hace veinticinco años, los cultivadores de cerezas de The Dalles, Oregón, me invitaron a ofrecer misas en los huertos y experimentar la comunidad de la Iglesia de San Pedro durante la cosecha de cerezas. Mientras estaba allí, uno de los sacerdotes se fue a estudiar español, así que asumí sus funciones durante cuatro semanas. Ofrecí misas, escuché confesiones en los campamentos, pero lo más importante de ese verano fue escuchar a la gente sobre la vida de los campesinos migrantes y comprender mejor la relación entre los trabajadores y los agricultores. Decidí volver el verano siguiente para preguntarles a los trabajadores y orchardistas cómo podía ayudarlos en futuras cosechas.

El segundo año ofrecí Misas en más de veinte huertas y escuché a los trabajadores hablar sobre su necesidad de atención dentro de la Iglesia Católica. Una mujer dijo: “No necesitamos que seas nuestro abogado, trabajador social o médico. Necesitamos que seas nuestro sacerdote”. Huerta tras huerta, escuché a la gente pedir la Primera Comunión para sus hijos. Muchos de los niños tenían entre 8 y 15 años. El párroco de San Pedro y el obispo les gustaron la idea de traer seminaristas y voluntarios en misión para ofrecer una misión de cuatro semanas que daría la bienvenida a los niños a la Primera Eucaristía.

Durante los siguientes once años, los seminaristas y misioneros laicos desarrollaron una misión sacramental que celebró más de 900 Primeras Comuniones, 400 Confirmaciones, 200 Bautismos y 20 bodas. Fue una misión que se terminó después de que fui a Fresno para ser director del Ministerio Campesino. En ese momento, dos veranos de escuchar a los campesinos y agricultores dieron sentido a mi vida como misionera redentorista.

Hoy llego a The Dalles para escuchar una vez más a los trabajadores y productores. Esta vez llego como miembro de la Red Católica del Ministerio Campesino Migrante. Será bueno recordar la anterior misión sacramental. Habrá algunos trabajadores que recordarán la misión anterior, pero ha habido muchos cambios desde 2010. Algunos de los agricultores vendieron sus tierras o se fusionaron con productores más grandes. La mayoría de los trabajadores serán nuevos desde aquellos primeros días de mis visitas a The Dalles.

Voy con la esperanza de comprender mejor la vida agrícola y las necesidades pastorales de los trabajadores y productores con los desafíos de hoy. Este es más que solo un viaje personal, pero escuchar para ayudar en la educación de líderes religiosos y voluntarios mientras trabajan en el cuidado pastoral de los migrantes e inmigrantes. A medida que se producen cambios en la agricultura, CMFN busca adaptarse a los desafíos que enfrenta la Iglesia al ofrecer atención pastoral a los trabajadores campesinos.

Listen to understand

Often, I realize that I listen to people so that I may teach, counsel or give help those who seek pastoral care. Twenty-five years ago, I was invited by cherry farmers of The Dalles, Oregon to say Masses in orchards and experience the community of St. Peter’s Church during the cherry harvest. While there, one of the priests went away to study Spanish, so I took on his duties for four weeks. I said Masses, heard confessions in the camps, but the most important part of that summer was listening to people introduce me to the lives of migrant farm workers, and to gain understanding of the relationship between workers and growers. I decided to come back the following summer to ask the workers and the growers how I could help them during future harvests.

The second year, I offered Masses in over twenty orchards and listened to workers talk about their need for attention within the Catholic Church. One woman said, “We do not need you to be our lawyer, social worker or doctor. We need you to be our priest.” In orchard after orchard, I heard people asking for First Communion for their children. Many of the children were from 8 to 15 years old. The pastor of St. Peter’s and the bishop welcomed the idea of bringing seminarians and volunteers in mission to offer a four-week mission that would welcome children to First Eucharist.

For the next eleven years seminarians and lay missionaries developed a sacramental mission that celebrated over 900 First Communions, 400 Confirmations, 200 Baptisms and 20 weddings. It was a mission that discontinued after I went to Fresno to be Director for Campesino ministry. At that time, two summers of listening to farm workers and growers gave meaning to my life as a Redemptorist missionary.

Today, I arrive in The Dalles to listen once again to workers and growers. This time I arrive as a member of the Catholic Migrant Farmworker Network. It will be good to remember the earlier sacramental mission. There will be a few workers who remember the earlier mission, but there has been a great deal of change since 2010. Some of the farmers have sold their land or merged with larger growers. Most of the workers will be new since those earlier days of my visits to The Dalles.

I go with hope to better understand farm life and the pastoral needs of workers and growers with the challenges of today. This is more than solely a personal journey, but listening to aid in educating religious leaders and volunteers as they work in pastoral care for migrants and immigrants. As changes take place in agriculture, CMFN seeks to adapt to the challenges the Church faces in offering pastoral care to agricultural workers.

Ayer prometí continuar las reflexiones sobre Compadres, pero eso continuará otro día. Salí de Omaha manejando hacia Oregon y Washington. Mi visita a Washington es directamente parte de mi trabajo por CMFN. Mientras esté en Washington, ayudaré durante dos fines de semana. Voy a visitar a la gente de Prosser. Ofrecí una misión bilingüe allí en 1998 o 1999.

También visitaré gente en The Dalles. Allí pasé trece veranos durante la cosecha de cerezas. Espero ver amigos y quiero escuchar sus recuerdos y su perspectiva sobre el trabajo que hicimos en ese momento. Esos veranos fueron una parte importante de mi compromiso con los campesinos migrantes. Quiero saber sus memorias y evaluación del ministerio que ofrecimos.

También quiero aprender de sus perspectivas sobre la vida agrícola hoy. Confío en que la gente estará abierta a considerar los cambios que se han producido y se están produciendo en las comunidades agrícolas hoy.

Llegué ayer por la tarde al Bosque Nacional Curt Gowdy, acampando y caminando por el bosque. Hermoso atardecer. Hoy viajaré y pasaré una noche acampando en Idaho. A partir de ahí pasaré un día con un amigo de los días del seminario redentorista. Voy a llegar en The Dalles el sábado.

Padre Migrante on way to The Dalles

Yesterday, I promised to continue reflections on Compadres, but that will continue on another day. I left Omaha driving to Oregon and Washington. My visit to Washington is directly part of my work with CMFN. While in Washington, I will help out for two weekends. I look forward to visiting the people in Prosser. I offered a bilingual mission there in 1998 or 99.

I will also visit people in The Dalles. I spent thirteen summers there during the cherry harvest. I look forward to seeing friends and I want to hear their memories and perspective on the work that we did at that time. Those summers were an important part of my engagement with farmworkers. I want to know their memories and evaluation of the ministry that we offered.

I also want to know their perspectives on agricultural life today. I trust that the people will be open in considering the changes that have and are taking place in rural agricultural communities today.

I arrived yesterday afternoon at Curt Gowdy National Forest, camping and hiking in the forest. Beautiful evening. Today, I will travel and spend a night camping in Idaho. From there I will spend a day with a friend from Redemptorist seminary days. I will arrive in The Dalles on Saturday.

Los compadres

“Compadres” es un término de relación entre los padres y padrinos de un niño. No hay traducción de compadre en inglés. En la comunidad que habla inglés, entendemos la relación de los padrinos con sus ahijados y ahijadas, pero no tenemos un término para describir la relación de los padrinos con los padres. Ser compadre es más que un honor, los compadres se comprometen a ayudar a los padres con la responsabilidad de formar a sus hijos en la fe, los valores y la moral.

El término origen se encuentra en los sacramentos del Bautismo y la Confirmación, pero también puede usarse en las relaciones sociales. Visité un rancho en México y un padre de tres jóvenes de la comunidad de Casa San Alfonso me llevó por el pueblo para conocer a otras personas que tenían hijos en Denver. En cada hogar, saludaba a hombres y mujeres como “compadre” o “comadre”. Pronto me di cuenta de que si bien fue padrino de varios de sus hijos y ellos pudieron haber sido padrinos de sus hijos, ciertamente no era compadre sacramental de todo el pueblo. En el ministerio, he encontrado dos formas muy útiles de usar compadres en el ministerio con niños y adultos jóvenes. En Mississippi, trabajé con pequeñas comunidades de inmigrantes que trabajaban principalmente en la agricultura de Bruce, Calhoun City y Vardaman. Si bien no existe un papel eclesial de padrinos para la Primera Comunión, es común dentro de las comunidades hispanas tener padrinos para la Primera Comunión. Llevamos a cabo nuestros servicios de la Iglesia en centros públicos ya que no teníamos edificio de la iglesia. Sin aulas disponibles, la instrucción religiosa se llevó a cabo en casas de familias o en un edificio de Caridades Católicas en Vardaman. Los padrinos de los sacramentos de iniciación eran los catequistas que ayudaban a los padres a preparar a sus hijos para los sacramentos. Tuvimos varias ocasiones de reunir padrinos para estudiar la fe por sí mismos, para que pudieran formar sus ahijados en la fe.

No eran catequistas formalmente capacitados, pero debido a la relación con los niños y sus padres, tomaron su papel con seriedad y enseñaron a los niños no solo para el beneficio de la Iglesia, sino como una ayuda para los papás que tenía una participación limitada en la Iglesia. Lo que les puede faltar en los estudios teológicos, lo suplieron con la relación personal con los padres y ahijados.

Los Compadres

“Compadres” is a term of relationship between the parents and godparents of a child. There is no translation of compadre in English. We understand the relationship of godparents to their godsons and goddaughters, but have no term to describe the relationship of the godparents to the parents. To be a compadre is more than an honor, the compadres promise to help the parents with the responsibility to form their children in faith, values and morals.

The term origin is found in the sacraments of Baptism and Confirmation, but may also be used in social relationships. I visited a rancho in Mexico and the father of three members of our Casa San Alfonso family took me around the village to meet others who had children in Denver. In every home, he greeted the men and woman as “compadre” or “comadre”. Soon, I realized that while he was godfather of several of their children and they may have been godparents of his children, he certainly was not a sacramental compadre of all the people. I told him that I suspected that he called everyone compadre because he did not remember all their names. He laughed and said, “Sí.”

In ministry, I have found two very helpful ways of using compadres in ministry with children and young adults. In Mississippi, I worked with small communities of migrants working mostly in agriculture from Bruce, Calhoun City, and Vardaman. While there is no ecclesial role of godparents in bringing children to receive their First Eucharist, it is common within Hispanic communities to have godparents for First Communion. We held our Church services in public centers as we had no church building. Without classrooms available, religious instruction took place in homes of families or in a Catholic Charities building in Vardaman. Godparents for the sacraments of initiation were the catechists who helped parents prepare their children for the sacraments. We had several occasions of gathering godparents to study the faith for themselves, so that they could teach their godchildren.

They were not formally trained catechists, but because of the relationship with the child and the parents, they took their role seriously and taught the children not only for the benefit of the Church, but as an aid to married couple who had limited involvement in the Church. What they may have lack in theological studies, they made up for personal relationship with parents and godchildren.

Todo lo que puedo decir hoy es “Gracias”. Comencé a celebrar mi quincuagésimo aniversario como sacerdote el domingo pasado en Denver. Fue maravilloso celebrar con mi familia de Casa San Alfonso. Lo que sea que hice por la gente allí, es solo una mota de arena en comparación con tantos jóvenes que han hecho tanto con sus vidas. Fue divertido ver a los que caminaron con nosotros en la Casa y nos permitieron caminar con ellos.

El jueves, celebrar con mi compañero de clase Rich Boever y otros Redentoristas que celebran sesenta, cincuenta y veinticinco años me recuerda tanto de nuestro carisma de evangelizar y ser evangelizados por los pobres. Agradezco a mi congregación y a aquellos miembros de nuestra familia Redentorista que me informaron y formaron en el camino de San Alfonso.

Y hoy, gracias a mis hermanas y hermanos, y a todos mis primos y familiares por celebrar este día conmigo. Gracias también a mis compañeros de clase de la escuela primaria, amigos y feligreses de Holy Name desde hace mucho tiempo. All that I can say today is “Thank you.” I began celebrating my fiftieth anniversary as a priest last Sunday in Denver. It was wonderful to celebrate with my Casa San Alfonso family. Whatever I did for people there, is only a speck of sand compared with so many young people who have done so much with their lives. It was fun seeing those who walked with us at the Casa and allowed us to walk with them.

On Thursday, celebrating with my classmate Rich Boever and other Redemptorists celebrating sixty, fifty and twenty-five years reminds me so much of our charism to evangelize and to be evangelized by the poor. I thank my congregation and those members of our Redemptorist family who informed and formed me in the way of St. Alphonsus.

And today, thanks to my sisters and brothers, and all my cousins and relatives for celebrating this day with me. Thanks also to my grade school classmates, friends and longtime parishioners of Holy Name. No one becomes a missionary, religious and priest without the support through the years. Holy Name truly is a great place to live and discover my vocation.

And thanks to the Hispanic community of Holy Name. I am proud to have been a part of your creating a home for Hispanic Catholics in north Omaha. I hope that you continue to bring life to this community.

He escrito de esta historia antes. Las dos experiencias anteriores, realmente cambiaron mi vida se hicieron cargo de algunos años en Casa San Alfonso y con la cosecha de cerezas. Aproximadamente 1500 personas fueron capturadas en las redadas. Muchos fueron deportados a Guatemala y México sin una audiencia ni la oportunidad de recibir asesoría legal. Los errores eran comunes, ya que varios de los que recibieron deportaciones aceleradas estaban legalmente presentes en los EE. UU., incluidos algunos ciudadanos estadounidenses. Esto fue mucho antes de que el presidente Trump implementara las políticas que separaban a los niños de sus padres.

Fui párroco de la parroquia San Antonio de Padua en Liberal, KS. Me pidieron que sostuviera a la niña. Mientras la abrazaba, me pensaba qué le sucederá. Su padre fue deportado a Guatemala sin saber que su esposa había dado a luz a su hija. La madre estaba en el hospital en coma. Trescientos niños de ese pueblo perdieron el contacto con el padre o la madre o ambos a partir de ese día.

El domingo siguiente, le conté a la gente en Misa lo que vi. Me derrumbé cuando hablé de sostener a la niña. No pude terminar la homilía. Continué la Misa, pero no pude contener las lágrimas. Al salir de la Iglesia, varias personas me entregaron notas. Algunos de ellos se solidarizaron con las víctimas de la redada, pero cuatro cartas me dolieron. Me llamaron nombres que no puedo repetir. Me dijeron que me fuera, que solo me importaban “esos ilegales”.

Fue difícil para mí continuar en mi ministerio. Cuatro semanas después, dejé la parroquia para tomarme un año sabático.

My 9-11 moment in ministry with migrant workers.

I know that I have told this story on blogs before. The previous two experiences that truly changed my life took over a few years at Casa San Alfonso and with the cherry harvest. The following took place on December 12, 2006, when the largest immigration raid in U.S. history took place in six states at the same moment. Obviously, ICE wanted this raid to intimidate Hispanic Catholics as it took place on the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe.

I didn’t really understand the meaning of “walk with my people” until I experienced the shock of mass deportation of migrants and immigrants, and the separation of children from their parents.  Immigration Customs Enforcement (ICE) conducted raids on meatpacking plants in Minnesota, Iowa, Nebraska, Texas, Colorado and Utah at the same time on Dec. 12, 2006. Approximately 1,500 people were taken in the raids. Many were deported to Guatemala and Mexico without a hearing or the opportunity to receive legal counsel. Errors were common, as several who received expedited deportations were legally present in the U.S, including some U.S. citizens. This was long before policies separating children from their parents implemented by President Trump.

I was pastor of St. Anthony of Padua Parish in Liberal, KS.  Liberal was a farming community that grew quickly in the 1970’s and ’80’s, when large meat packing plants were built in Southwestern Kansas.  There were beef plants in Liberal, Garden City and Dodge City.  A pork processing plant was in Guyman, OK.  In 2001, Redemptorists went to the Diocese of Dodge City to help in the development of Hispanic Ministry. 

There was a vibrant Hispanic community in Liberal.  The Feast of Guadalupe brought over 5,000 people to our various celebrations, beginning with a Serenata to the Virgin on the eve of the feast. In the morning we celebrated Mañanitas and Mass before sunrise.  All day long, dancers and musicians performed in the Church.  In the late afternoon, we began to hear of immigration raids around the country, in six different states.  The raids took place in meat packing plants including Cactus, Texas, about 100 miles away.  Our Mass at six pm was not the joyful celebration of the Virgin that we ordinarily celebrated.  There were sobs coming from various parts of the Church, as families heard of loved ones being taken captive in Cactus and in other meat packing communities.  The next day, we organized donations of food and clothing to be taken to Sts. Peter and Paul parish in Dumas, TX.  The following day changed me and my experience of Hispanic ministry.   

Nearly 300 workers were arrested in the Cactus, Texas raid.  Sts. Peter and Paul parish in Dumas, and the principal and teachers at the Cactus schools were impressive in caring for the children and their families.  Many of those arrested were deported immediately with no contact or information given to spouses or children.  The government made no provisions for caring for the children.  The school and the parish sent the children to their homes if there was a parent not taken in the raid, or to the homes of relatives in the community.  Still many children stayed at the church, and volunteers spent the night with about 80 children. 

On the second day after the raids, we arrived with food, clothes, blankets, diapers, and some cash donations.  Parish volunteers told of a tragic story.  The wife of one of the men, taken in the raid, received a call from her husband.  He told her that ICE was in the plant and that he would probably be taken.  He told her to go to the home of a relative for safety.  As she hurried out of the house she fell and was badly injured.  She was nine months pregnant.  In the trauma she went into labor, and her child was born that afternoon.  The woman went into a coma.  It was uncertain if she would survive.  The baby was healthy and given to the aunt of the child.  I was asked to hold the baby girl.  As I held her, I wondered, what will happen to her.  Her father was deported to Guatemala without knowing that his wife had given birth to their child.  The mother was in the hospital in a coma.  Three hundred children in that town lost contact with father or mother or both beginning that day. 

On the following Sunday, I told people at Mass about what I saw.  I broke down when I spoke about holding the infant.  I could not finish the homily.  I continued the Mass, but could not hold back my tears.  Leaving the Church, several people handed me notes.  Some of them were sympathetic to the victims of the raid, but four letters hurt.  I was called names that I cannot repeat.  I was told to leave, that I only cared about “those illegals.” 

It was difficult for me to continue in my ministry.  Four weeks later, I left the parish to take a sabbatical.
