¿Puede una madre olvidar a su bebé?
Como esas palabras formaban parte de las lecturas de la misa de ayer, pensé en mi sobrina y su hijo de seis meses, Emmett James. Parece que cada dos días la mamá o la abuela de Emmett James publica una foto de su ‘bebé más hermoso del mundo’. Cuando las Escrituras preguntan: “¿Puede una madre olvidar a su bebé?”, sabemos la respuesta a la pregunta. Y el amor de Dios es verdadero para cada uno de nosotros. Que todas las madres compartan tal devoción por sus hijos.
Madres en peligro
En los últimos días ha sido muy difícil ver imágenes de lo que está ocurriendo en Ucrania. Una foto de mujeres en un refugio cuidando a sus bebés mostraba a mujeres en un lugar que era una escuela o biblioteca que ahora es un refugio para gente sin hogar que no puede escapar el terror de la guerra. Una mujer sostuvo a un niño con la misma expresión de asombro y alegría por la vida que se puede ver en Emmett James. El niño parece seguro en los brazos de su madre. Sin embargo, en el rostro de la madre está el miedo, la tristeza y la desesperación de la situación.
El Amor de Dios por nosotros es constante
Viendo las fotos de mi sobrina y su hijo, y de la madre y el niño en un refugio en Ucrania, las palabras de Isaías muestran la constancia del amor de Dios por nosotros. Todos somos no solamente hijos amados por Dios, sino hermanos y hermanas en ese amor. Todas las guerras, la violencia, el resentimiento, la ira y la desilusión no cambian la realidad de que todos somos hermanos y hermanas.
Las personas que huyen de guerras y desastres no están tan lejos de nosotros. Que nuestros líderes mundiales y todas las personas aprendan la lección de Isaías. Todos somos hijos de Dios.

Can a Mother Forget Her Child?
As those words were part of yesterday’s readings at Mass, I thought about my niece and her six-month-old child, Emmett James. It seems that every other day Mom or Grandma of Emmett James posts a picture of their ‘most beautiful baby in the world’. When scripture asks, “Can a mother forget her child?”, we know the answer to the question. And God’s love is true for each one of us. May all mother´s share such devotion for their children.
Mothers in danger
In recent days it has been so difficult to see pictures of what is taking place in Ukraine today. A picture of women in a shelter caring for their babies showed women in a place that was a school or a library that is now a shelter for homeless people unable to escape the terror of war. A woman held a child with the same expression of wonder and joy for life that can be seen in Emmett James. The child appears secure in the arms of his mother. Yet, on the face of the mother is the fear, the sadness and the desperation she must endure.
God’s Love for us is constant
Seeing the pictures of my niece and her child, and the mother and child in a shelter in Ukraine, the words of Isaiah impresses me about the constancy of God’s love for us. We are all not only children loved by God, but we are brothers and sisters in that love. All the wars, the violence, the resentment, anger and disillusionment do not change the reality that we are all brothers and sisters.
People fleeing wars and disasters are not so far away from us. May our world leaders and all people learn the lesson of Isaiah. We are all children of God.

Oh Jesús, tú nos llamas: “Síganme”. Bendice, Señor, a todos los que acogen tu llamado. Puede que el camino no sea fácil, pero tenemos la confianza de que todo es posible si caminamos contigo. Que este viaje nos abra los ojos a las maravillas de tu amor por nosotros. Oramos por toda tu gente, por todos los creyentes e incrédulos, por los líderes y seguidores. Oramos por la sanación, el perdón, la compasión, la justicia y la paz. Oramos para que, al seguirte, nosotros también podamos ser pescadores de hombres. Bendícenos en nuestro viaje.
O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
