Bienvenido al extraño / Welcome the Stranger

Bienvenido al extraño / Welcome the Stranger

Welcome the Stranger

Consider who Jesus addresses in the gospel of Matthew as he speaks about the final judgment: “He will sit upon his glorious throne, and all the nations will be assembled before him.” Ordinarily, we consider this message personally, but Jesus is addressing the nations and their response to the poor. “I was a stranger and you welcomed me.” (Mt. 25:35)

A friend wrote about his concerns about immigration in the United States. He wrote, “seeking a better life is not an acceptable excuse for breaking the immigration laws.” He does not recognize that he is overly influenced by the concerns of politicians than seeking an understanding from the perspective of faith. The politicians simply see the stranger as a problem. Our response to the migrant is not a political problem. It is a moral problem. It is a challenge of faith. Jesus does not see the stranger as a problem. He identifies himself with the stranger. If there is a problem, it is our failure to welcome the stranger.

Redemptorists in all parts of the world are discerning what ways God is calling on us to respond the migration of people all over the world. It is not at all about politics. There will be no resolution of problems caused by the largest movement of people in the history of the world as long as people consider migrants as “illegals” or “aliens”. Until we see the migrants as brothers and sisters or see them as the presence of Jesus, there will be no peace and no honor.

O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
