Portadores de la memoria histórica
“Somos portadores de una memoria histórica, el presente y el caminar hacia el futuro, siendo un pueblo que avanza, rompe barreras y crea soluciones”. (Declaración de Campesinos, 2007)
Al leer la CMFN, Declaración de Campesinos, me conmovió la declaración de que “somos portadores de una memoria histórica”. Esto es tan importante no sólo para los mismos campesinos, es importante para sus hijos y para las futuras generaciones de trabajadores agrícolas. Los avances en seguridad, derechos humanos y justicia provienen de los sacrificios realizados por generaciones anteriores de campesinos. Nunca debemos olvidar sus contribuciones a la economía agrícola de nuestro tiempo.
También es importante recordar la participación de la Iglesia en romper barreras y crear soluciones. Esto debe pasar más allá de los temas de justicia y protección de los trabajadores, para llevar la vida de fe a los campesinos, migrantes y personas en situación de movilidad.
El momento actual de la vida campesina, tiene algunas ventajas que fueron realizadas por anteriores defensores de la causa de los trabajadores agrícolas, pero también nuevos desafíos. La pandemia de COVID reveló disparidad en la protección y atención de la salud de los campesinos. El lio de inmigración crea inseguridad para muchos trabajadores y sus familias. Y dentro de la Iglesia, existe la necesidad de una mayor conciencia de las barreras que experimentan los campesinos en la búsqueda de atención espiritual y los sacramentos.
Nuestro camino hacia el futuro necesita personas comprometidas con “avanzar, romper barreras y crear soluciones”. Que la CMFN haga realidad la misión presentada en su Declaración de Campesinos.

Bearers of historical memory
“We are bearers of a historical memory, the present, and the journey into the future; being a people that moves forward, breaking barriers and creating solutions.” (Declaration of Campesinos, 2007)
As I read the CMFN, Declaration of Campesinos, I was moved by the declaration that “we are the bearers of a historical memory.” This is very important not only for the campesinos themselves, it is important to their children and to future generations of agricultural workers. Advances in safety, human rights and justice come from the sacrifices made by previous generations of farmworkers. We must never forget their contributions to the agricultural economy of our time.
It is also important that the participation of the Church in breaking barriers and creating solutions be remembered. This needs to go beyond the issues of justice and workers protections, to bringing the life of faith to campesinos, migrants and people of mobility.
The present moment in campesino life, has some advantages that were gained by previous bearers of the cause of agricultural workers, but there are new challenges. The COVID pandemic revealed disparity in protection and health care for campesinos. The ongoing struggles for immigration justice, creates insecurity for many workers and their families. And within the Church, there is a need for greater awareness of barriers that campesinos experience in seeking spiritual care and the sacraments.
Our journey into the future needs people committed to “moving forward, breaking barriers and creating solutions.” May CMFN realize the mission presented in their Declaration of Campesinos.

Oh Jesús, tú nos llamas: “Síganme”. Bendice, Señor, a todos los que acogen tu llamado. Puede que el camino no sea fácil, pero tenemos la confianza de que todo es posible si caminamos contigo. Que este viaje nos abra los ojos a las maravillas de tu amor por nosotros. Oramos por toda tu gente, por todos los creyentes e incrédulos, por los líderes y seguidores. Oramos por la sanación, el perdón, la compasión, la justicia y la paz. Oramos para que, al seguirte, nosotros también podamos ser pescadores de hombres. Bendícenos en nuestro viaje.
O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
