No tenga miedo

He visitado comunidades religiosas, albergues para migrantes y refugiados.

Be not afraid

People often ask me, “Aren’t you afraid when you go to Mexico?” It does not pass my mind as I travel in Mexico. There are dangers in many countries. I pray for those who have experienced difficult times, even violence in other countries. When I have traveled outside of the United States, I have visited historic sights, and families that I met in my ministries around the United States. I have visited religious communities, shelters for migrants and refugees. I have visited the cities, the beaches, the farms and the barrios served by priests and religious dedicated to work with the poor.

I have been to barrios that have a reputation as being dangerous, but I have been with people dedicated to ministry with the poor. With them, there has been no reason for fear. I realize that I do not go to Mexico or other countries just to view the country, I go to encounter people of faith. I experience the faith of those serving the poor, but also, I encounter the faith of the poor.

I understand concerns that people may have in going to a different nation, but if we live only by that fear, we miss out on much of life. The words of Jesus to the Apostles after the Resurrection were. “Peace be with you”. Those words are repeated several times. When we are people of peace, God is with us.

Some people speak of being fearful of the migrants seeking asylum in our country. We need to realize that the asylum seekers are not the criminals, but many are at our border seeking safety from the “bad guys” in their countries. When we meet the immigrant, “be not afraid”. As you care for the migrant, may “peace be with you.”

O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
