Nuestra congregación redentorista ha estado estudiando las realidades de la migración en la frontera México/Estados Unidos. Nuestra intención es descubrir formas en que nuestra congregación pueda ministrar a los ciudadanos extranjeros que viven y pasan por México. Durante los últimos seis meses hemos visitado más de treinta refugios y hemos visitado a personas que han trabajado por los derechos humanos de los migrantes en la frontera durante muchos años. Visitamos a solicitantes de asilo y refugiados de Matamoros a Tijuana. Hemos conocido a tantas víctimas de la crueldad del gobierno, el crimen organizado y las pandillas violentas. Los solicitantes de asilo y los refugiados son víctimas, no criminales.
Durante las últimas semanas, he estado en Arizona y California, viendo publicidad política maliciosa y deshonesta. ¿Qué motiva tal hostilidad contra los inmigrantes? La publicidad está llena de mentiras, desinformación de la realidad migratoria y políticas crueles que representan el odio y la venganza. Vergüenza por los políticos, los medios antiinmigrantes y la extraordinaria desinformación hecha por los funcionarios de Homeland Security sobre quién está llegando a nuestras fronteras.
He caminado con migrantes e inmigrantes por más de treinta años. Están entre las mejores personas con las que he trabajado. No hay justificación para el odio malicioso patrocinado por los políticos que buscan beneficio del sufrimiento de los pobres del mundo.

Our Redemptorist congregation has been studying the realities of migration on the Mexico / United States border. Our intention is to discover ways that our congregation may minister to foreign nationals living in and passing through Mexico. For the past six months we have visited over thirty shelters and visited with people who have worked for human rights of migrants on the border for many years. We visited with asylum seekers and refugees from Matamoros to Tijuana. We have met so many victims of government cruelty, organized crime and violent youth gangs. The seekers of asylum and refugees are victims, not criminals.
For the past few weeks, I have been in Arizona and California, seeing vicious dishonest political advertising. What motivates such anti-immigrant hostility? The advertising is full of lies, misrepresentation of the migration reality and cruel policies that represent hatred and vengeance. Shame on the politicians, the anti-immigrant media and the extraordinary misrepresentation made by Homeland Security officials about who is coming to our borders.
I have walked with migrants and immigrants for over thirty years. They are among the best people with whom I have ever worked. There is no justification for the malicious hatred sponsored by politicians seeking to profit from the suffering people of the world.

May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
