Dios de vivos
En 2008 celebré la Semana Santa en Sasabe, Sonora. Es un pueblo pequeño al otro lado del muro fronterizo al oeste de Nogales, AZ. En algún punto al oeste de Sasabe termina el muro. Es un área conocida por los migrantes que ingresan al desierto para intentar cruzar a los Estados Unidos. Hay mucha propaganda del gobierno de México avisando a la gente de los peligros de cruzar a los Estados Unidos a través del desierto. Cada día que estuve allí, mientras corría la presencia de un sacerdote en el pueblo, varios migrantes venían a pedir una bendición antes de entrar al desierto. Les dije: “Por supuesto que rezaré por ustedes, pero no le digan a la gente del otro lado que un sacerdote estadounidense los está bendiciendo al entrar al desierto”.
Pregunté a muchos si tenían miedo. Algunos admitieron que lo eran, pero confiaron en Dios, y si estaban heridos o morían, Dios todavía estaba con ellos. El empuje de su tierra natal fue más fuerte que su miedo a la muerte. Muchos pusieron sus temores en las manos de Dios.
Creo que muchos de los migrantes que conocí escuchan el evangelio de este domingo como una promesa de que Dios estaba con ellos en su búsqueda de vida, seguridad, libertad y paz. Confiaron en las palabras de Jesús, que Dios “no es Dios de muertos, sino de vivos”.

God of the Living
In 2008, I celebrated Holy Week in Sasabe, Sonora. It is a dusty small town on the other side of border wall west of Nogales, AZ. At some point west of Sasabe the wall ends. It is an area known for migrants entering the desert to attempt crossing into the United States. There are many signs from the government of Mexico warning people of the dangers of trying to cross into the United States through the desert. Each day that I was there, as word went around the town that a priest was present several migrants came to ask for a blessing before they entered the desert. I told them, “Of course, I will pray for you, but don’t tell people on the other side that an America priest is blessing you as you enter the desert.”
I asked many if they were afraid. Some admitted that they were, but they trusted in God, and if they were hurt or died, God was still with them. The push from their native land was stronger than their fear of death. Many placed their fears in the hands of God.
I believe that many of the migrants whom I met, hear this Sunday’s gospel as a promise that God was with them in their search for life, security, freedom and peace. They trusted Jesus’ words, that God “is not God of the dead, but of the living.”

Oh Jesús, tú nos llamas: “Síganme”. Bendice, Señor, a todos los que acogen tu llamado. Puede que el camino no sea fácil, pero tenemos la confianza de que todo es posible si caminamos contigo. Que este viaje nos abra los ojos a las maravillas de tu amor por nosotros. Oramos por toda tu gente, por todos los creyentes e incrédulos, por los líderes y seguidores. Oramos por la sanación, el perdón, la compasión, la justicia y la paz. Oramos para que, al seguirte, nosotros también podamos ser pescadores de hombres. Bendícenos en nuestro viaje.
O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
