Adviento, considerar nueva vida

Advent, considering new life

This is my favorite time of the year. Our Advent liturgies speak to us of the fulfillment of God’s promises to his people. The prophets speak of the coming of a Messiah. Isaiah says that “The Lord God will wipe away the tears from all faces.” (Is. 25: 8) “O people of Zion, no more will you weep.” (Is. 30: 19) “Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call him Emmanuel.” (Is. 7: 14) Advent is a time to consider our life and our hope. As a priest and as a Redemptorist, this is a time to reflect not only on the call of the Virgin mother and the child Jesus, but on what is essential to the religious vocation that I have received.

When I was a child, it seemed normal to consider a religious vocation as a way of life. I entered a minor seminary when I was fourteen. Eighty-one young men entered with me at St. Joseph Prep Seminary. We were idealistic young men following the idealistic challenges placed before us by President John F. Kennedy and Pope John XXIII. We asked ourselves what we could do to make the country, the world and the Church better.

As many years have passed, there have been challenges along the way, but Advent is always the time to consider new ways, new life. Pope Francis says that there are too many “sourpusses” (EG. 85) around us. Isaiah confronted Ahaz, but Ahaz could not believe that a virgin could conceive a son. We have shed tears during the COVID pandemic. We have experienced hard times and hard hearts. Now is a time to shake off the darkness and sadness of our days to place our trust in the hope given in the birth of a Savior.

May God be with each and every one of us as we prepare the way of the Lord. Let us choose the light, the good, the just and the holy in this season. Peace on all.

O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
