Entering Holy Week

The harvest season comes to an end in Yuma, Arizona at this time. And the pruning of vines and fruit trees is ending in many states. Now is the time for many agricultural workers to plant and cultivate the crops for harvest in the Summer and the Fall. This is a great time of the year to hope and envision the bountiful crop. It is also our time in faith to see hope and new life. The liturgies of Holy Week teach with little need for homilies.

On Palm Sunday, we begin the liturgy remembering Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem. We raise the palm branches, singing “Hosanna.” We read the Passion of Jesus, with everyone participating, even crying out “Crucify him!” On Thursday, the washing of the feet reminds us that as disciples we are to serve one another. We celebrate Jesus present in the Eucharist. On Friday, through many customs we recall His passion and death on the cross.

We know that these celebrations, while they happened because of our sinfulness, we know that Jesus came not to condemn, but to bring us eternal life. It is with hope of new life that we enter Holy Week. Let us make the most of these days of faith, that we me may enter into the joy of Easter.

O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
