Dios más amable y gentil
A medida que nos acercamos a la celebración de la Semana Santa, las lecturas del evangelio en las Misas llaman atención sobre los fariseos y saduceos que rechazan a Jesús. Repiten a menudo que son descendientes de Abraham, discípulos de Moisés. Ponen a prueba a Jesús en su ortodoxia, su seguimiento de la Ley del sábado y su comida con recaudadores de impuestos y pecadores. Su imagen de Dios es dura. No hay compasión en sus prácticas.
Profesamos creencia en un Dios más amable y gentil que los fariseos. Jesús muestra la misericordia de Dios a la mujer sorprendida en adulterio, a la mujer junto al pozo y al ciego de nacimiento. Los últimos días de la vida de Jesús revelan la bondad y la dulzura de Dios, hasta acoger al ladrón arrepentido en la cruz junto a él. Él no le quita la muerte al ladrón en la cruz, pero le asegura su lugar en la vida eterna..
Hay muchos que me piden que ore por sus hijos que ya no practican la fe católica. Por supuesto, oro por ellos, pero también oro para que los padres confíen en un Dios más amable y gentil. Que confíen en que Dios ama a sus hijos más que ellos. La gracia de la fe es un regalo de Dios dado en el tiempo de Dios, no en nuestro tiempo. Que los padres que se preocupan por la fe de sus hijos nunca se desesperen por la fe de sus hijos. Sus hijos están en las manos de Dios, no en las nuestras. Confía en nuestro Dios amable y misericordioso.

Kinder and gentler God
As we get closer to our celebration of Holy Week, our gospel readings at Mass call attention to the Pharisees and Sadducees rejecting Jesus. They repeat often how they are the descendants of Abraham, the disciples of Moses. They test Jesus on his orthodoxy, his following the Law of the sabbath and his eating with tax collectors and sinners. Their image of God is harsh. There is no mercy in their practices.
We profess belief in a kinder and gentler God than the Pharisees do. Jesus shows God’s mercy to the woman caught in adultery, the woman at the well, and to the blind man. The last days of Jesus life reveal the kindness and gentleness of God, right up to welcoming the repentant thief on the cross next to him. He does not take death away from the thief on the cross, but he assures him of his place in eternal life.
There are many people who ask me to pray for their children who no longer practice the Catholic faith. Of course, I pray for them, but I also pray for the parents to trust in a kinder and gentler God. May they trust that God loves their children more than they do. The grace of faith is a gift from God given in God’s time, not our time. May parents who worry about the faith of their children never give in to despair about their children. Their children are in God’s hands, not ours. Trust in our gentle and merciful God.

Oh Jesús, tú nos llamas: “Síganme”. Bendice, Señor, a todos los que acogen tu llamado. Puede que el camino no sea fácil, pero tenemos la confianza de que todo es posible si caminamos contigo. Que este viaje nos abra los ojos a las maravillas de tu amor por nosotros. Oramos por toda tu gente, por todos los creyentes e incrédulos, por los líderes y seguidores. O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
