Imaginar de nuevo el cuidado espiritual
El Papa Francisco habla de la falta de atención espiritual a las personas en la periferia de la Iglesia. Esto no es simplemente un reconocimiento de enfrentar los desafíos de evangelizar a los pobres, los migrantes, los refugiados y los trabajadores manuales. Hay mucha gente que está fuera del cuidado ordinario de nuestros ministerios católicos. El ministerio de atención pastoral para trabajadores agrícolas e inmigrantes rurales es el enfoque de CMFN. Apoyamos a los voluntarios, catequistas, clérigos y religiosos que sirven a nuestras comunidades rurales, pero a medida que reconocemos a los trabajadores agrícolas olvidados, llegamos a reconocer a tantos otros que están desatendidos por las prácticas tradicionales de las parroquias y los trabajadores religiosos.
Muchos trabajadores de la construcción, el turismo, la hospitalidad, la atención médica, la seguridad, el transporte y las personas que cuidan a los pobres marginados del mundo también necesitan atención pastoral. “Cuidar a los cuidadores” fue una de las mayores necesidades que experimentamos en nuestras visitas a los albergues de migrantes en México en nuestras visitas a la frontera México-Estados Unidos.
La pandemia de COVID nos desafió a brindar servicios religiosos y evangelización de nuevas maneras. Se desarrollaron algunas formas creativas de llegar a las personas, pero a medida que pasaba el tiempo, anhelábamos la interacción con otras personas de fe. Hemos regresado a nuestras iglesias, pero no todos. Algunos de los métodos utilizados durante las fases iniciales de la pandemia han sido útiles para continuar con la evangelización y el ministerio. Otros métodos se han escapado a medida que muchas parroquias intentan volver al “ministerio normal”, sea lo que sea que eso signifique.
Hay una necesidad en nuestra iglesia de imaginar de nuevo todo el ministerio. Las estructuras del ministerio siempre se están ajustando a las realidades que encuentran las personas de fe en cada generación. Desde los tiempos apostólicos hasta hoy, la iglesia ha desarrollado métodos de evangelización adecuados a los tiempos, la cultura y la vida de las personas a evangelizar. En los Hechos de los Apóstoles, Pablo y sus compañeros son enviados a proclamar la Palabra a los gentiles. En el Concilio de Nicea, la Iglesia respondió a la vida después de la persecución en el mundo romano. Monjes, monjas, congregaciones religiosas y misioneros desarrollaron centros de evangelización, educación y atención espiritual. Los consejos de la Iglesia respondieron a las amenazas, desafíos y oportunidades para que la Iglesia creciera y ofreciera cuidado espiritual. Los misioneros llevaron la Palabra a todos los continentes del mundo, llegando a personas de distintas culturas y expresiones religiosas. Cuando la ciencia abrió nuevas fronteras, la Iglesia reinventó métodos para el cuidado espiritual. Responder a las guerras, la migración y la inmigración global, los desastres naturales y una mayor conciencia de lo que está sucediendo en todo el mundo, desafía nuestra era actual.
En lugar de reaccionar a los acontecimientos mundiales buscando consuelo en “siempre se ha hecho así” (EG. 33), volvamos a imaginar nuestro ministerio. No olvidemos los caminos del pasado. Aprendamos de esos caminos. No tengamos miedo, mientras buscamos llegar a aquellos en la periferia de nuestra fe. Algunos de los que están en la periferia nunca han escuchado la Palabra de Dios, pero muchos también son los que se han desanimado por los mensajes de exclusión, juicio y abandono. No tengas miedo de imaginar de nuevo nuestro caminar con Dios y Dios caminando con nosotros.

Reimagining spiritual care
Pope Francis speaks about the lack of spiritual care given to people on the periphery of the Church. This is not simply a recognition of facing challenges of reaching the poor, the migrant, the refugee and the manual laborer. There are many people who are outside the ordinary care of our Catholic ministries. The ministry of pastoral care for farmworkers and rural immigrants is the primary focus of CMFN. We support the volunteers, catechists, clergy and religious serving our rural communities, but as we recognize the forgotten workers in agriculture, we come to recognize so many others who are underserved by traditional practices of parishes and religious workers.
Many workers in construction, tourism, hospitality, health care, security, transportation and people caring for the marginalized poor of the world also need pastoral attention. “Caring for the caregivers” was one of the greatest needs that we experienced in our visits to migrant shelters in Mexico on our visits along the Mexico/United States border.
The COVID pandemic challenged us to provide religious services and evangelization in new ways. Some creative ways of reaching people developed, but as time passed, we longed for interaction with other people of faith. We have returned to our churches, but not all of us. Some of the methods used during the initial phases of the pandemic have been useful for continued evangelization and ministry. Other methods have slipped away as many parishes try to return to “normal ministry”, whatever that may mean.
There is a need in our church to reimagine all ministry. The structures of ministry are always adjusting to the realities encountered by people of faith in every generation. From apostolic times until today, the church has developed methods of evangelization appropriate to the times, the culture and the lives of the people to be evangelized. In the Acts of the Apostles, Paul and his companions are sent to proclaim the Word to the Gentiles. In the Council of Nicea, the Church responded to life after persecution in the Roman world. Monks, nuns, religious congregations and missionaries developed centers for evangelization, education and spiritual care. Councils of the Church responded to threats, challenges and opportunities for the Church to grow and offer spiritual care. Missionaries took the Word to all continents of the world, reaching people of distinct cultures and religious expression. When science opened new frontiers, the Church reimagined methods for spiritual care. Responding to wars, global migration and immigration, natural disasters and greater awareness of what is happening around the world, challenges our present age.
Rather than reacting to world events by seeking comfort in “We have always done it this way.” (EG. 33), let us re-imagine our ministry. Let us not forget the ways of the past. Let us learn from those ways. Let us not be afraid, as we seek to reach those on the periphery of our faith. Some of those on the periphery have never heard the Word of God, but many also are those who have become discouraged by messages of exclusion, judgment and abandonment. Do not be afraid to re-imagine our walk with God and God walking with us.
