A spirit of communion / Un espíritu de comunión

A spirit of communion

“We are a community committed to the migrant pastoral and we serve with a spirit of communion to a multicultural community. Starting with a commitment to the formation of youth in our community.” (Declaration of Campesinos, 2007)

“Walk with my people” was a theme repeated in many ways by people in Hispanic ministry, when I began working with migrants and immigrants. My Redemptorist congregation identifies our mission as to serve “those for whom the Church has not yet been able to provide sufficient means of salvation, those who have never heard the Church’s message, or at least do not receive it as the “Good News.”  (C&S 3) The commitment of CMFN to a spirit of communion with the multicultural community and youth fits well in my religious calling and in my experience as a missionary.

The spirit of communion is more than a commitment to help the poor. It commits one to a relationship with the campesino and the immigrant. Our concern for those whom we serve is comprehensive. Pope Francis says that “all of us are asked to obey his call to go forth from our own comfort zone in order to reach all the ‘peripheries’ in need of the light of the Gospel.” (EG. 20)

The greatest joy of the campesino missionary is not what we offer to people on the periphery, but that the campesino and the immigrant “walk with us.”

O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
