Ser evangelizados por los pobres
Nuestra misión Redentorista es: “evangelizar y ser evangelizados por los pobres”. Es fácil reconocer que una congregación misionera evangeliza a los pobres, pero el verdadero desafío es dejar que los pobres nos evangelicen. Más que enseñar, necesitamos aprender. En lugar de liderar, debemos seguir. Más que hablar, necesitamos escuchar.
No es tan difícil como uno puede imaginar. Comienza con la observación. Cuando los discípulos de Juan el Bautista le preguntaron a Jesús dónde vivía, Jesús dijo: “Venga a ver”. (Jn. 1:39) Lo que los discípulos descubrieron fue que la evangelización era más que buscar respuestas a sus preguntas. Significaba caminar con Jesús para experimentar el significado de la salvación. Durante unos dos años, los Apóstoles escucharon, aprendieron y siguieron a Jesús. Vieron cómo curaba a los enfermos, perdonaba a los pecadores y caminaba con los marginados de su tiempo.
Evangelizados por el migrante
Cuando comenzamos Casa San Alfonso en 1991, queríamos que los jóvenes migrantes se sintieran como en casa. Si les permitimos ver dónde vivimos, ¿nos dejarían entrar en sus vidas? Una de las mejores formas de saber que hemos entrado en sus vidas es el humor. El mejor humor no es reírse de los errores ajenos, sino reírse de si mismo. Un día, dos de nosotros caminábamos de regreso a nuestra casa cuando comenzó a llover. Cuando llegamos a la puerta y dije: “Estoy mojado”. Mi compañero dijo: “Sí Padre. Estás mojado, pero yo soy mojado. Usted puede sacarse, pero yo no puedo”.
Me doy cuenta de que puedo escuchar y hasta entender las situaciones de los migrantes, pero no vivo con su inseguridad. Un hombre dijo: “Padre, no queremos que experimente nuestro sufrimiento. Solo estamos agradecidos de que lo conoce”.
Como estadounidense, siempre quiero trabajar para resolver los problemas, pero con los inmigrantes tenía que aprender una paciencia que nos es ajena. No soy bueno con la paciencia. Es una lección de humildad conocer la paz de los migrantes que esperan que pase una injusticia.
No todos los migrantes son virtuosos en su respuesta a las crisis que enfrentan. Algunos responden del mismo modo a las injusticias que experimentan. No es fácil seguir las palabras de Jesús, “Pon la otra mejilla”, pero caminando con migrantes e inmigrantes, reconozco en la mayoría que es posible seguir el ejemplo de Jesús.

To be Evangelized by the poor
Our Redemptorists mission is to: “evangelize and to be evangelized by the poor.” It is easy to recognize that a missionary congregation seeks to evangelize the poor, but the real challenge is to let the poor evangelize us. Rather than teach, we need to learn. Rather than lead, we need to follow. Rather than speak, we need to listen.
It is not as difficult as one may imagine. It begins with observation. When the disciples of John the Baptist asked Jesus where he lived, Jesus said, “Come and See.” (Jn. 1:39) What the disciples discovered was that evangelization was more than seeking answers to their questions. It meant walking with Jesus to experience the meaning of salvation. For about two years, the Apostles listened, learned and followed Jesus. They saw how he cured the sick, forgave the sinner and walked with the outcasts of his time.
Evangelized by the migrant
When we began Casa San Alfonso in 1991, we wanted migrant youth to feel at home in our house. As we let them see where we lived, would they let us into their lives? One of the best ways to know that we had entered their lives was humor. The best humor is not laughing at another’s errors, but laughing at one’s own situation. One day two of us were walking back to our house when it began to pour. When we got to the door and I said, “Estoy mojado.” (I am wet.) My companion said, “Sí Padre. Tu estás mojado, pero yo soy mojado. Tu puedes sacarse, yo no puedo.” (It does not work well in English. Father, you are wet, but I am undocumented-wet. You can dry yourself, but I can’t.)
I realize that I can listen and even understand the situations of the migrants, but I do not live with their insecurity. One man said, “Father, we don’t want you to experience our suffering. We are just grateful that you understand it.”
As an American, I always want to work to solve our problems, but with migrants, I have had to learn a patience that is foreign to us. I am not good at the patience part. It is humbling to know the peace of the migrants waiting for an injustice to pass.
Not all migrants are virtuous in their response to the crises that they encounter. Some do respond in kind to the injustices that they experience. It is not easy to follow Jesus’ words, “Turn the other cheek,” but walking with migrants and immigrants, I recognize in them that it is possible to follow Jesus’ example.

Oh Jesús, tú nos llamas: “Síganme”. Bendice, Señor, a todos los que acogen tu llamado. Puede que el camino no sea fácil, pero tenemos la confianza de que todo es posible si caminamos contigo. Que este viaje nos abra los ojos a las maravillas de tu amor por nosotros. Oramos por toda tu gente, por todos los creyentes e incrédulos, por los líderes y seguidores. Oramos por la sanación, el perdón, la compasión, la justicia y la paz. Oramos para que, al seguirte, nosotros también podamos ser pescadores de hombres. Bendícenos en nuestro viaje.
O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
