Madre como catequista
Una familia de Arkansas invitó a nuestro equipo misionero a cenar. Durante la cena, la madre de dos niños dijo: “Mi hijo no puede recibir la Primera Comunión. Carlos tiene nueve años y conoce su fe”. Le pregunté qué lo detenía. Explicó que las clases de catecismo se impartían en la Iglesia los domingos por la mañana antes de la Misa. Solo tenían un coche y vivían a doce millas de la Iglesia. Su esposo trabajaba en el equipo de mantenimiento de la planta empacadora tres domingos al mes. La familia solo podía asistir a misa una vez al mes. Como Carlos solo asistía a una clase cada mes, la catequista dijo que no asistía a suficientes clases para recibir la Primera Comunión con la clase.
Le pregunté: “Dijiste que Carlos sabe el catecismo. ¿Cómo es eso?” Me dijo que era catequista en México antes de casarse. Los domingos por la mañana cuando no podían asistir a misa, ella, Carlos y Lupita (6 años), después del desayuno rezaban el rosario. Después del rosario, usando el catecismo que usaba en México, daba una clase a sus hijos. Empecé a hacerle varias preguntas a Carlos sobre Jesús, la Iglesia y los sacramentos. Estaba listo tanto para la Confesión como para la Primera Eucaristía. Le aseguré a su madre que hablaría con el pastor sobre Carlos.
El pastor respondió: “Así que están educando a sus hijos en casa. Maravilloso, solo brinde su información a nuestra secretaria y Carlos puede recibir su Primera Comunión con la clase el próximo mes”.
Después de reconocer la educación en el hogar de Carlos, he fomentado la educación en el hogar para niños en muchos otros entornos. Al principio, muchos padres dicen que no están preparados para ser los catequistas de sus hijos, pero cuando se les da un poco de preparación y algunos materiales para enseñar a sus hijos, muchos encuentran que la experiencia de enseñar a sus hijos le da nueva vida a su propia participación en la fe. Como dijo el Papa Juan Pablo II, necesitamos una nueva evangelización, “nueva en su ardor, métodos y expresión”. Los padres como catequistas cumplen su promesa de enseñar a sus hijos los caminos de la fe.

Mother as catechist
A family in Arkansas invited our mission team for supper. During the dinner, the mother of two children said, “My son can’t receive his First Communion. Carlos is nine years old and he is knows his catechism.” I asked what was stopping him. She explained that the catechism classes were held at the Church on Sunday mornings before the Mass. They only had one car, and lived twelve miles from the Church. Her husband worked on the maintenance crew at the meat packing plant three Sundays each month. The family was only able to attend Mass once a month. Since Carlos only attended one class each month, the catechist said that he did not attend enough classes to receive First Communion with the class.
I asked her, “You said that Carlos knows his catechism. How is that?” She told me that she was a catechist in Mexico before she married. On Sunday mornings when they were unable to attend Mass, she, Carlos and Lupita (6 years old), after breakfast they would pray the rosary. After the rosary, using the catechism that she used in Mexico, she would teach a class to the children. I began asking Carlos several questions about Jesus, the Church and the sacraments. He was ready for both Confession and First Eucharist. I assured his mother that I would talk with the pastor about Carlos.
The pastor responded, “So they are home schooling their children on faith. Wonderful, just give our secretary their information and Carlos can receive his First Communion with the class next month.
After recognizing the home schooling of Carlos, I have encouraged home schooling for children in many other settings. At first, many parents say that they are not prepared to be their children’s catechists, but when given a little preparation and some materials to teach their children, many find the experience of teaching their children as bringing new life to their own participation in the faith. As Pope John Paul II said, we need a new evangelization, “new in its ardor, methods and expression.” Parents as catechists fulfill their promise to teach their children in the ways of faith.

O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
