Aunque me he mudado muchas veces, siempre he estado asignado a una comunidad Redentorista.

Where do you live?

As a Redemptorist missionary, I have lived in many places working often with migrants and immigrants. While having moved many times, I have always been attached to a Redemptorist community. For the past three years, I have taken the place of rural priests for two to four months at a time while they went away for studies, or to recuperate from a health incident. I also spent five months to study foreign nationals living in Mexico. In those three years, I was rarely at my Redemptorist community in Kansas City. One might call me homeless, without a true “home”. Over those three years, it has been difficult to answer the question, “Where do you live?” or my sisters ask, “Where are you now?”

I have been an itinerant priest, always working within my Redemptorist community and working in connection with the dioceses where I go. Yet, the mobility of my ministry makes it difficult to answer the question, where is your home?

When Jesus was asked, “Where do you live?” by the disciples of John the Baptist, he simply said, “Come and see.” During his public life, he had no home. He walked with the poor. He was comfortable in the homes of the poor, the tax collectors, those struggling with faith, and in the homes of people of means. He made his home a matter of relationship with his Father, rather than a location.

In Hispanic Ministry, many people say, “Padre, you have a humble home in _____”, and then they name their city, state and nation. I always like to say that I took a vow of poverty and I have more homes than the richest people on earth. Rather than identify my home as a place, I am most at home in the homes of the poor, the farm worker, the migrant and immigrant. I am happy that in joining the Catholic Migrant Farmworker Network, I will find my home once again to be with itinerant worker communities.

I will have my home base in a Redemptorist community, but my real home is with rural immigrants who make home wherever they find an opportunity to work and support their family.

O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
