Vas a golpear a alguien”, y ¡BAM!

I often tell this story. I love everything about our celebrations of Posada. It is such a good way to prepare for Christmas and it keeps us from celebrating Christmas before its time. May God bless all communities who prepare the way of the Lord with these traditions.

My first year of participating for all nine days of the Posadas took place in Denver. Each evening we met at the Church, and different families sponsored each evening. Along with refreshments of pan dulce, hot chocolate, atole, champurrado, and bags of candy to give the children. We had a piñata for the children each evening. I quickly learned the dangers of the PIÑATA.

One evening, I gave the baton to the children as they tried to break the Piñata. With the older children, we blindfolded them as they swung wildly to break the piñata bouncing around them. One eight-year-old girl was already a seasoned softball player and when she swung at the piñata, using her home-run swing. She began to drift away from the piñata, and I feared that she might hit the children gathered around. I tried to stop her saying, “Stop, stop. You are going to hit someone,” and BAM! She hit me on the head.

The following year, I stayed far away from the piñata, but tragedy struck again. A child swung the baton and let go. It flew through the air and hit me in the mouth. I did not see it coming. The third year, one of the football players from West High gave me his helmet. “You need this, Padre.”

I love our Posada celebrations, but when the piñata comes out, I will be found in another room.

O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
